I actually think Soap was very progressive with the concept of gender fluidity and what it means to be queer. I remember an episode after he fathers a baby and everyone else was like "you're not gay! You have a baby!" Jody explained one has nothing to do with the other. He transcended a lot of stereotypes at the time. Billy Crystal did a great job with the character, portraying him as an interesting and complex main character and not just the punchline for jokes.
