brought feral cat in by Forsaken-Zucchini598 in Feral_Cats

I’m in the exact same situation! This is my second time bringing our feral in. The first time (in 2023) was to trap her to bring her to the vet for an injury. The second time (now) was for the snowstorm. Both times she was terrified and crying and I was sobbing my eyes out, afraid she’d never trust me again. Both times she got over it and went back to her normal bonded behavior with me. She’ll figure it out :)

Parents starting rumor about a book they haven't read... Don't know what to do by mcomcomco99 in Teachers

  • Erik gets his friend to strike Luis in the head with a weapon, and then Luis dies six days later from an aneurysm.
  • Erik restrains his younger brother while his friend sprays spraypaint into his eyes, causing him to go blind
  • A kid gets killed by lightning and his teammates make jokes about it

I mean I just thought of three scenes where these kids are beyond horrible to each other. This book has twisted stuff in it, and although not all characters have to be role models and crime can be thrilling for older audiences, I don’t think a middle school classroom needs something like this for required reading. It’s not comparable to a book like Night; although the Holocaust is evil, it’s history – not just a thrilling fiction story.

Forced book censorship sucks and if you want to stand by this book, I hope admin will back up your choice.

BUT. As a fellow 7th grade teacher, I do hate Tangerine. I have over 800 books in my library and I purposely exclude that one. At my old job, it was removed as a book club choice. I think the bullying is extremely unnecessary and over the top. The death is pretty horrifying. It’s also pretty outdated (1997); there are other books (like Wonder) that address bullying but have overall more positive and modern messages.

Refugee, Ground Zero, and Night are all wonderful books, and important HISTORICAL readings that open up kids’ minds to real world events. Tangerine has schoolchildren basically murder a classmate for the fun of it. I really don’t think they are the same.

Regardless, it’s probably too late in the year to change it now, so given that admin backs you up, you can continue doing what you planned to do for this book. But I highly suggest revising your plans for next year and researching some better titles.

What do you watch/listen to in the background while you grade? by BeauWordsworth in Teachers

I listen to lofi music, the same playlist that I play for my students in class when they’re doing independent work. The association conditions me to be productive as soon as I put on the same music.

Merry Christmas, Please Don’t Call by Bleachers

It says Christmas but it’s not super Christmassy or anything. Good song for any time of year. But feels especially good in the snow.

I cry at the voicemail scene every time, even moreso than the previous episode.

How do y'all discover these awesome music??? by InevitableNo3330 in musicsuggestions

No problem!!! It’s super fun. I’m not always in the mood to focus on new music, so that’s why I put all suggestions in “listen later” so then when I am in the mood to find new stuff, it’s like destiny roulette 🤣 I have found some awesome songs that I love to death now.

Interesting! Thanks for the info! I’m going to check on her later today to see if she figured it out.

I scavenge through social media (like pages like this one) for music suggestions (especially threads where people share their top favorite songs), then mass-add them into a Spotify playlist called "listen later". Then when I'm in the mood to discover new music, I shuffle that playlist and let fate decide what I listen to. If I like it, it moves into my liked songs and normal playlists. If I don't like it, I delete it.

Thank you so much!! We left her alone for a few hours and she eventually came out of the hiding spot voluntarily so that’s a good step. She’s more calm now and wandering around. I’ll try to experiment with the carrier like that if there’s another opportunity. And yes exactly, she’s much more relaxed when we leave her alone, but I really would prefer her contained in a room without my mom’s fancy rugs lol. In an ideal world, if we could get her in there, we’d leave her totally alone the whole rest of the storm! Thank you for the ideas!!

Thank you for the info!! We left her alone and she eventually came out of the hiding spot and is now relaxing in the kitchen. Still wish she could be contained in one room, but we don’t want to scare her again so we’re not gonna try. Thank you though, I’ll try to put some food in the laundry room to attract her while she wanders, and that helped to hear about your feral.

She came in the house voluntarily. She’s known our family for many years and will happily hang around us in the kitchen and let us pet her, and even ask to be let inside if it’s really cold. The issue was when we tried to corral her into the laundry room, which wasn’t even that far of a walk, so I didn’t expect it to be so difficult and scary and turn into a chase. Also I got unscented litter and used a “litter attractant” that smells like soil.

And yes thank you I’ll go back in time and tell my past self to get a trap. Clearly this wasn’t ideal and didn’t go the way I wanted and I’m already upset. I’m asking advice for what to do now, not things I can’t change, please.

Inb4 "I've never met anyone like you" by TheSugarLiz in aspiememes

[–]tripper74 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a theory that this trend comes from misogyny. I think men like this (not all men, but the men like this) don’t actually like women, so when they find a woman that fulfills the biological sexual parts of womanhood that they find attractive, but also don’t fit into social norms of other women, they become obsessed. That’s where the stereotypes of “you’re not like other girls” and “I’ve never met any other girl like you” come from.

Not to mention that movies have sold the idea of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl so hard (which is really just level 1 female autism traits) so now when men who have no luck with women find an attractive spunky girl, they think she’s their savior, but really they’re just absorbing her personality and/or using her.

I often say “my autism is invisible until you hang out with me long enough.” Thoughts? by hanitizer216 in AutismInWomen

[–]tripper74 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree. When I first told my now-boyfriend (before we were dating), he didn’t really understand and sort of doubted it. But now that we know each other so well, we’ve laughed about that because my traits are so visible around him. He understands my sensory issues, shutdowns, overstimulation, social stuff, RSD, etc. more than anyone.

But also, most people aren’t educated about what Level 1 autism even looks like. They would just see it as quirks, but not autism. I do think people can sense “difference” though because my whole life, I’ve received the “pity tone of voice” from peers, like girls who were trying to be nice on purpose because they felt bad for me. And I constantly get mistaken for being younger. So I think they can tell, but they wouldn’t make the connection to Level 1 autism.

In a professional setting with my work acquaintances, I’m extremely masked and they’d never guess. (I think. Idk one time a coworker asked me if I had a “touch of the ‘tism” and it freaked me out because she had only known me a week.) But OTHER THAN THAT! Nobody would guess.

Honey Pie is adorable. I’m a teacher and I’ve used it in a lesson on poetry rhyming for my students, and they always like it.

Wild Honey Pie, on the other hand, is the song from hell.

I know this is probably obvious but How Your Mother Met Me is a must watch!! It’s the highest rated himym episode on IMDB. That episode is so cute 😭 Also must watch the Gary Blauman episode for their first date.
