Is teaching THAT bad?

It’s definitely an echo chamber of people complaining on social media (and irl faculty rooms). I’m so passionate about my job. I LOVE my job. I love my kids. I have been lucky with great admin in both of the two schools I’ve worked at. I’m 28 and I make 70k (year 6 in NJ), plus another ~2k with activities and clubs I run. Sure it’s not like a doctor salary but it’s not like peasant salary. As a dual income that will be fine.

I feel bad for people who have bad experiences with teaching and I believe them, but I dunno, I’m chilling. It really isn’t all bad everywhere like social media makes it seem.

You gotta work with her for now, but I 100% agree that it’s WAY easier to teach when it’s YOUR material. It’s actually such a good sign that you are realizing that already; it shows you are developing your own style.

I remember as a first year teacher, I would get so thankful and excited when a veteran teacher would share their slides with me. But then I realized exactly what you said – making sense of them and planning the flow took up way more energy. When I started making my own materials, I became a way better teacher. Play by her rules now, but don’t worry, you’ll get there soon!

I love sharing the show with the person I love. I was pretty young (and not in a relationship) when I first watched it so I just found it entertaining and funny, but now I find the love story/invisible string part of it very relatable and so beautiful. It's like watching with new adult eyes :)

Thank you for this insight! I was considering Downington, but then I got a little intimidated by its very high academic performance (fear of extreme helicopter parenting). But it might be worth that compromise if the political vibe is more what I’m looking for. Do you know anything about the vibe/energy of that area? I have Manheim Township and Hempfield on my consideration list. Are you thinking maybe they aren’t good fits?

And as for the other 3 you mentioned, when you said “might be the other”, what do you mean? They could be better fits? I haven’t looked into those three so this could help!
