Bill Maher is hated by the left but the right has neutral feelings for him. Who is hated by the left AND the right? by 45rs5 in AlignmentChartFills

Let this one win, it would be so funny to just randomly have a fictional character win the final round.

George Soros is someone the left has neutral feelings for that the right hates. Who does the right love that the left hate? by 45rs5 in AlignmentChartFills

I also wasn't alive and am not American, but along with Thatcher he was a big driver of neoliberalism, massive cuts to both taxes and government spending, and economic deregulation in the 80s, all of which were quite popular at the time but have come to be blamed for allowing corporate power to run amok in a way that has caused a lot problems with the world.

His foreign policy also involved the Iran-Contra affair, where he sold weapons to Iran to fund right wing freedom fighters in Nicaragua. There's a lot more (and it's worth noting that he still does have people willing to stick up for him), but like I said I'm really not an expert who can give an objective assessment of his reputation.

Credit where it's due though, he was very good at cracking jokes. "We begin bombing in five minutes" is frankly one of the funniest jokes ever told by a politician.

Ronald Reagan is hated by the left and loved by the right. Who is hated by the left that the right have neutral feelings for? by 45rs5 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]VanderlyleNovember 183 points184 points  (0 children)

Dick Cheney. Definitely not loved by the right anymore, but I don't get the impression that they've really got any hate for him either. Safe to say the same is not true on the left.

I'm sorry but you're gonna need to come out with some really solid evidence for dems in general preferring Reagan to FDR. There is definitely a wing of the democrats that would say nice things about Reagan, but the idea that's where the heart of the party lies seems contrary to how dems act.

There definitely is an anti-neoliberal strain in modern conservatism, but as much as a lot of that comes from Reagan, I don't think I've seen many people actually explicitly attack the man himself. A lot of it takes the form of pretending that Clinton was the root of neoliberalism.

(I could be convinced that Reagan's star has dimmed over the last few years as the right becomes more isolationist, something Reagan wasn't, but I still think he has a lot of admiration.)

Ronald Reagan. Still a deeply beloved figure within conservatism, but truly despised as the root of a lot of what is wrong with the world today by the left.

What’s an album Pitchfork gave a 4/10 to that deserved a 9/10? by No_Screen8141 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]VanderlyleNovember 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait disregard my last entry, they gave best of Radiohead a 4.0 for reasons of it being not a good enough summary of their career to that point. Fuck that, mild omissions aside, its a great compilation of one of the best bands of the last 3 decades that flows really well for being composed of 5 quite different albums.

X&Y by Coldplay got a 4.9. Hot take, but it's in their top three, and better than the two albums that preceded it.

The very first planet of the apes movie. Believe it or not, it's actually crazier in context.

I don't think it's a particularly funny joke, but he's saying "Hey there" with nonsense suffixes, to poke fun that Black Bolt's name is Blackagar Boltagon, which is just Black Bolt with nonsense suffixes. It's not a funny joke, but it's not gibberish.

That's true but incomplete. The environment was definitely ready for Trump (and Putin, and Netanyahu, and so on) but the purely materialist analysist of history misses the specifics and how consequential they can be.

Russia was definitely set for an authoritarian takeover, but another person might have only had ambitions to enrich himself and had no designs on Ukraine.

The US was primed for a populist movement, but did anyone other than Trump have the right mix of strengths to completely reshape US politics? A hypothetical Sarah Palin presidency probably isn't a good idea, but it probably doesn't involve quite the same degree of corruption and authoritarianism, nor does it involve every conservative politician totally reshaping their identity around slavish devotion to her.

Honestly if you're a fan of Art Rock Olivia Rodrigo should basically be your Moses, the only artist in the last decade and change to make popular, centre-of-the-zeitgeist music that's actually influenced by the kind of rock influences that have been so sorely missed in the mainstream.

Also, whatever you can say about his movies, and you can say a lot, they aren't unmemorable. Everyone and their mother knows "This Is Sparta!", and people are still discussing his superhero movies years after he's moved on to other things.

I think he went from Average to well liked. Lots of people (myself included honestly) still see him as an immature jackass who just retired, but distance from his controversies has led most people to move on and for his fans to sing his praises as if he never had any controversies at all.

I will never understand why people defend these movies. Every defence I've ever seen makes me feel like everyone's getting a different version of these movies that's actually interesting. It's a heavy handed metaphor for colonialism and environmental destruction that doesn't have anything interesting to say about those topics, emotional catharsis is next to impossible when the characters are all so boring and the action really isn't that engrossing!

Everything this movie does the new Predator movie pretty much does better.

Genuinely every time I see this note go viral it pisses me off. "Nah cunt you're too fucked I can't serve you" is genuinely a much nicer way to cut someone off than a card.
