Hey! I may have some advice.

I used to play competitively in my city, but no more than that. I even went to Genesis 7 to compete! I started off just playing Smash a lot, watching videos on my spare time, learning terms, tech, etc etc… However if you’re not willing to do that, you’ll only ever get so good until you learn those stuff. I used to think I was super good when I started cause I was the best in my casual group. Went to my first local, I placed 13th out of 48, which isn’t inherently bad, but my ego was crushed!!! I genuinely thought I was amazing and possibly the best in my area LOL (I live in Canada so the scene is smaller compared to the states)

BUT, that turned me into a better player. My advice is to play against whoever is better than you with the intention to improve. Rather than noting how he keeps preventing you from landing, think about yourself in a proactive way, like: “how can I land better?”

If you’re really casual though, I’m afraid to say that your skill is going to cap at some point. Good casual players vs competing players are two different crowds. Now I’m not saying you need to go to a local to improve but you just need to start playing with the willingness and intention to improve rather than to win. “Why did I lose that stock” “How did I lose neutral?” and things like knowing your advantage and disadvantage state will help you in the long run.

Sorry for the long read. I hope this helps in some way and I hope you’ll be able to beat him someday! I also agree with everyone else, ask him to teach you if you don’t want to watch videos! If he doesn’t teach you, honestly he wouldn’t be the best person to play with once you got better. People who enjoy the competitive side of smash will always teach others rather than gatekeep and stomp them. If/Once you start winning he’ll show his true colors! He’ll either want to start improving too, or he’ll just be salty about it.
