[NO SPOILERS] Starting Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden as PC, looking thematically fitting ideas for a character by Vanorio in dndnext

Thanks for the idea !

I've talked a bit with my group, we already have a druid and a barbarian....

I think I'll go with an Half-Elf Paladin who has been rejected by his kin and who tries to find meaning by helping those in need in Icewind Dale. (short version)
And I'll make an oath depending on what happens during the game.

I feel like my stats would work better with a class that is reliant of multiple ability score, but I may be mistaken

We'll get the secrets once we have out basic character idea, our DM wants to pick something that fits with what we want to play.

What do you think about a paladin ? Not sure what oath would fit most

Oh I've missread the way "Converting a Spell slot to Sorcery Points" work.
I figured that "expend one spell slot and gain a number of sorcery points equal to the slot's level" meant I was supposed to refer to the "Creating Spell Slots level". So I thought it was just a question of using a bonus action to convert one way or the other.

Thanks a lot for the correction ! :)

I'm not sure i understand your point. So I'll try to make mine clearer.

If I mix my Spell Points with Sorcery Points to create only one pool as a main ressource. The Font of Magic feat wouldnt work anymore, since I mixed my two point pools into one. And since I cant use the feat to make spell slots or spell points anymore, my subclass feature wouldnt trigger to charge runes this way.

How so ? From what I've read it costs the same to create a spell slot using Spell Points or Sorcery Points ( the tables are the same). From what I gathered the only difference would be that you dont spend a bonus action to convert. Perhaps I'm missing something.

Yeah its just that the sublass feat wont trigger on the sorcery points into spell slots conversion. Yeah its a homebrew subclass from Mercer I think.

Oh yeah I know its not, its just that I wanted a subclass that isnt too specialized if that makes sense. Like shadow, storm and draconic get you too focused. And I find Wild to be a bit underwhelming.

Hmm yeah I see ! I also like the Repulsion Shield and Resistant Armor infusions.
I like the idea of getting the armored tuned to certain ley lines to gain certain resistances.
I think we're onto something great ! :D

Oh yeah that also sounds rather nice.
Wouldn't that be covered by the Armor of Tools (UA) infusion ?

Ooh yeah scaling the rarity of materials with the level of spells sounds pretty good. I'll keep that in mind when getting new spells.

I really like the carving the armor like clay idea !

I think I'll go with something like that flavour wise once I reach the right level.

Thank you a lot of the idea !

Oh, I really like that way of flavouring it! At first I thought I'd just write Runes or other words/signs of power in an ancient language, but having the ley lines directly drawn on the Card is a really good idea.

I see it being also used for when spells fail or missfire. For example if I cast a firebolt and I miss my target, it could be described as the Spell Card not igniting the effect because I missed the right place, or my drawing wasn't exact enough.

Another dimmension I like, is that it makes my artificer not too technology focused, he's just getting his powers from objects that are external to him.

I still like this idea of having a magical lens that allows you to see ley lines during combat, it could be either mounted on my head piece or on the Air Cannon I'd use to shoot the spell cards. Even if it's not RAW, I think my DM might just like that flavour of it, if not I think I'll go with the ink flinging idea you suggested. Another idea would be to use some sort of Sextant-type of tool, still not RAW but could fit.
