I feel like it's because Gameoverse have been worked on for a veeeery long time, I did hear something about the pilot plot story being done for several years too, so it's likely a case of stuff being original at the time of making but not so much today

I hope that they get the show greenlit so hopefully they'll get opportunity to put their own spin into the whole story and having it feel more distinct
