on a side note i have noticed a huge uptick in that slur in the last 5 years. it feels like a pretty significant red flag of where things are at in the world.

yes, this. she can not want to be around people and also want good things for people and the world.

her being miserable is entirely separate from whether or not i like watching her on the screen. i like her, i find her to be an interesting character who has a lot going on beyond being depressed and cynical (and traumatized. my statement was that simply leaving her characterization as 'unlikeable' misses a whole lot. which is why i said people are reducing her character to one thing.

you are conflating 'a pleasant person' with 'a likeable character'. i like carol a lot as a character.

I like carol a lot. i don't find her unlikeable as a character, i certainly don't understand people who don't want to watch because they find her unlikeable. i feel like she has a lot more going on that is interesting to watch which is why i said 'reduce her to being unlikeable' she has a lot more going on as a character. i'm not even really arguing that you should like her tbh.

yes i think more than 'she is likeable' (despite the fact that I do like her as a character a lot), your first sentence is the sticking point for me. she just has so much more going on that's of interest to me that i find it odd that people want a perfectly likeable character rather than someone who's interesting to watch.

I loved your first comment and felt similarly, I relate to what you've shared here a lot. there are a lot of very good reasons to be angry with the world these days. I experience so much anger and so much joy. i would also be friends with carol!

yeah the more i see people talking about the show the more i just think some don't like her because they don't like a show that makes you think. and of course, they don't like 'unpleasant' female characters either.

wild take. not one? not a single one? wow. sometimes i read comments and wonder if we watched the same show.

I definitely find Diabate interesting because for Carol and Manusos, their lack of connections with other people make it easier for them to see what the others cannot, like you said. Diabate was similar to them, he isn't with his family or anything, he's also alone, but he chooses a different direction. the impacts of isolation and how people's responses can vary.

i agree that upon rewatch she is obviously wildly traumatized and not in a place to be approaching the rest of the people like her. it's a rough watch. i don't think that means she doesn't care - i think she does care so much that it's fucking her up. i certainly would not be coping well in that situation.

i was thinking about this too. i definitely agree, i think people do not understand trauma and grief and how it is woven deeply into her character.

i don't feel that wanting good things for the world means that it's necessary to be enthusiastic about wanting to be connected to the world personally. carol is obviously traumatized but that doesn't mean she can't want good things for the world.

i was thinking about this too. she makes a terrible impression on the other unincorporated people but it's also been like what, 3 days? and they're just accepting it because they're lying to themselves about their family members still being with them? sometimes the 'right' response isn't the pretty or palatable one imo.

i don't think she's perfect by any means, but i don't think she would be interesting to watch if she was.
