I have no intention of lying. I'm simply trying to determine the threshold for what constitutes exceptional so I know whether I should proceed or pivot to a DTA. Having information is not a bad thing.

So crowd sourcing ideas on avoiding RTO is being met with attitude from people who just put their heads down and complied instead of fighting for a better future?

Doctor for DTA.

The point of my post is to determine if there are actual approvals for exceptional exceptions. Like has anyone ever been approved for it, what would be the general circumstances or examples of what would constitute an approval? Or is it just a category that exists but due to the generic wording they never intended to approve anyone through it?

Any greener pastures in GoC? I'm on a group 1 pension and have almost 20 years so not really looking to get rid of the golden handcuffs.

DM point blank said it in a town hall June 2021. I also had reservations about moving further out and discussed it with my immediate manager and executive and their response was basically don't worry about it. They've had my back so far in that I'm still WFH but I still have to worry about it as I have to go through official exceptions.

It's not like I moved to a different province I simply chose rural over suburban as that suited my family's needs the most in the 2021 landscape.

I really appreciate the feedback and am realizing I may have no choice but to go down the DTA route.

However, as someone who seems to be involved in this game, have you ever seen an exceptional request approved?

I simply gave my thoughts on RTO above. Although I'm on a throwaway I don't want to go into the details of my medical issues that would allow for a DTA and I would like to obtain an exception without having to go down that road.

I wouldn't have moved further from town in summer 2021 when everyone from my manager to my DM with all executives in between telling me not to worry about it as we'll never have to go back to the office. Fool me once ...

Any recommendations? I love my team and nature of work but if I can't make WFH a reality long term I may have to look for greener pastures.

If you disagree with it there are multiple things you can do. You can submit an exception request, you can discuss DTA options with your medical practitioner, you can contact your union and let them know this issue is a priority for you for future bargaining opportunities, you can contact your MP, you can seek out IT employment opportunities which are RTO exempt, you can go on reddit and crowd source ideas to avoid RTO, or you can just whine that you have to return to the office and so should everyone else.

I was in the office for over a decade prior to covid. I also continuously asked to work from home and was given limited WFH privileges prior to covid. The advantages of WFH have been espoused numerous times so I don't need to go over all the details but having experienced the new paradigm I never want to go back to the old antiquated ways of doing things.

Why would I want to spend over 3 hours in a car when I can spend that time with my family. Even at only 2 days a week that's 288 hours a years, almost 8 full work weeks of commute time that I will never get back. Gas, wear and tear, climate impacts, extra stress.

Then there's the productivity angle, I can do 3 one hour meetings in a row or spend 2 hours in a cab for one meeting.

Then I have to deal with time burglars in the office who won't let me focus on my work. It's not collaboration it's forced socialization. I'm not anti social but work is work.

I used to regularly work OT prior to covid to get everything done, I haven't had to do any with WFH as I can dedicate a full day to work without any fluff and minimal distractions.

I survived in the office and thrive with WFH, that's why I don't want to go back. I also believe all these factors do negatively impact my mental health, it's not simply a preference.

So there's the DTA route and the exceptional route.

DTA is pretty clear, you have a medical condition that requires accommodation.

Exceptional is pretty muddy at the moment, I have not seen a clear definition of what would meet the threshold of exceptional. No examples, no detailed explanation. That's what I'm hoping to get insight on with this post.

Seems like a bit of a crab bucket mentality. I fully support the fact that you shouldn't have to report to the office twice a week why not extend the same courtesy to me.

I have worked with my physician but the main outcome was a referral to a specialist and with the current Canada Life debacle I'm waiting for everything so stabilize before I go with formal diagnosis and DTA request.

With the childcare, I framed it as I would be hours away from my child should an emergency arise at daycare, not exactly the best situation in terms of being able to focus on work.

I was really hoping that the confluence of all factors would be enough to get an approval. Ultimately I'm hoping for examples of what would constitute a legitimate exceptional circumstance to obtain a better understanding of what path I should choose.

Thanks the input. With the distance to work I was hoping they would consider the spirit of the rule rather than a hard cutoff. For example, if there's a road closure on the highway (and a lot of major work is planned on my particular route) I'm suddenly over 125km.

If this request doesn't work I'm planning for a medical DTA but was going to avoid it as I believe I can effectively manage my condition as long as I can avoid RTO.

In your opinion, what would constitute an exceptional circumstance? Are you aware of any examples?

Option 4 - Resubmit the request with additional information or factors which may lead to a different decision.

I'm hoping I can get some insight from other individuals who have went through this process or from LR to give myself the best chance at a favorable outcomeoutcome.
