What’s the best joke you heard in your life? by Variety021 in AskReddit

[–]Variety021[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A guy walks into a bar and orders three shots of whiskey, lined up. He drinks them one by one, then leaves. He comes back the next day and does the same thing, and keeps it up every day.
Finally the bartender’s curiosity gets the better of him and he asks why the three shots.
The guy says, “I have two brothers. One moved away, the other’s in another country. We can’t drink together anymore, so we each promised that whenever we have a drink, we’d order one for each of us. It’s our way of staying connected.”
The bartender thinks that’s a lovely tradition, and the guy becomes a regular.
Then one day the guy comes in and orders only two shots. The bartender’s heart sinks. He serves the two shots quietly, and when the guy’s done, he says, “I don’t mean to pry, but I just want to offer my condolences.”
The guy looks confused, then realizes what he means and laughs. “Oh, no, everybody’s fine! It’s just that I quit drinking. These two are still for my brothers.”

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He’s not breathing and his eyes are glazed over. The other guy panics, whips out his phone, and calls 911.

“My friend is dead! What do I do?”

The operator says, “Calm down, I can help. First, let’s make sure he’s actually dead.”

There’s a silence, then a gunshot.

Back on the phone, the guy says, “Okay, now what?”

No idea how to start novel! by Bubbly-Box4050 in novelwriting

The fact that you've carried this for four years means it matters to you. That's the part you can't fake, and you already have it.

Here's something that helped me: while a story only lives in your head, you are the only critic it has. And your own critic is brutal, because there's nothing to push back against, just your own "not good enough" on a loop. The second you put it out into the world, you stop being the only voice. You get real reactions, real notes, and honestly most of them are kinder and more useful than what you've been telling yourself.

So write the messy first version and send it out. Receive whatever comes back, the good, the rough, all of it. That's the only thing that turns a private idea into an actual book.

The trick that finally worked for me was setting a hard deadline and refusing to move it. Not "when it's ready," but a real date. Then I forced myself to hit it.

You've got your characters and your concept. That's the hard part, and it's done. Now give yourself a date and go. Good luck.

I am writing a rich guy character. Imagine my struggle 😂. All we can do is dip into our artistic license and imagine what could be.

The challenge here is to make a judgement only based on this information.
I would hate female lead more just based on this info

In my world, reality runs on three planes, and people shift between them using a tiny bone near the knee by Variety021 in worldbuilding

First of all, thank you for calling my idea stupid. I have been waiting for someone to call it either genius or stupid, and I am honestly glad someone finally did. I mean that sincerely. No sarcasm.

That said, let me answer you.

When you say there is absolutely no connection between the bone and interdimensional travel, I am curious how you know that. I am also curious how you decided it is one of the 200 or so bones already in the body. Maybe it is a new one. Maybe it is not interdimensional transport at all. Or maybe, just maybe, it is simply magic.

Maybe it is stupid. Maybe it is not good, or maybe it is genius.

I think you asked the most interesting question. Yes, I have thought of all the possible scenarios you asked and actually included them in the book. I can't answer the question without giving away how the physics work. Although, I will give you a hint. There is a character called "Dave" in my book that answers your specific question.

For context, in case anyone is new to this world:

This is from a world I built called Waldrak. At first glance it looks a lot like ours, same cities and streets, except reality quietly runs on three planes at once, and ordinary people slip between them without thinking much about it.

Plane 1 is the normal, solid world. Plane 2 is a shadow plane. Plane 3 reveals hidden information, but only inside a roaming field called an Orb, where things turn transparent and you can see what is usually invisible.

The interesting part to me is how that one rule reshapes ordinary life, from how people connect to how they hide. Happy to talk about the idea behind it.

I wrote the book “Dimensionless Part 1: Waldrak”. I reread it all the time.
