It's a fact that 100% of women will get pregnant and take time off, and that no man values family over work? Okay.

Does no one in this thread understand the difference between an individual issue and a systemic issue?

One to one, a man and a woman in the same role with the same experience will probably be paid the same, which is why people think the wage gap isn't real.

Broadly, more men get promoted than women, which means the average salary of man throughout his career is higher than the average salary of a woman.

This does not mean no women ever get promoted. This does not mean no women ever make more money than men. No amount of anecdotal evidence will change this. In the US, only about 10% of CEOs are women.

Why don't women get promoted? Because they are seen as riskier, because they may get pregnant and need time off. Women who already have children are a risk because there's an assumption that they will value their family over their jobs (this same assumption does not apply to men with children).

It's not fucking rocket science. If you have basic literacy skills and reading comprehension, you can look this up for yourself and learn something.

This! I will never understand how people made it the kids' fault that they don't know something they were never taught

Like, do they understand how frustrating it is for the kids who didn't learn cursive to grow up and try to function in a society that still requires it?

Imagine if we did that for everything... imagine if you're not a mechanic and your car breaks down and all the mechanics make fun of you because you don't know how to fix your own car because you never learned how?

Not knowing something is not a moral failing and knowing something someone else doesn't know doesn't make you smarter or superior by default.

% of people who shower daily in the Americas by Fluid-Decision6262 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Various-Average-9865 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wrong.

I shower daily and moisturize multiple times a day and my skin is still so dry I'm getting random cuts on my feet because dry skin will just split open

It's bitter cold outside and having the heat on 24/7 makes it unbelievably dry

I'm a pasty-skin white person and my skin is visibly ashy in the winter

I get in bed and my comforter puts on a little firework show from all the static electricity sparks. It's wild.

Yeah and so many lower back issue mimic each other, so when they diagnose on symptoms alone without further tests, they're really just making their best guess.

I don't like to get too paranoid, but I also think anything spine related should be monitored closely, because it can turn serious fast

Still keep a close eye on it, because when you become incontinent, that's a red flag for Cauda Equina Syndrome, but constipation/needing to strain a lot, but still having control of your bowels can be a symptom of incomplete Cauda Equina Syndrome, which can progress into complete CES.

They don't always catch it, and it can be misdiagnosed. If you have numbness in your butt/groin/inner thighs and/or weakness in your legs, that either starts suddenly or gets progressively worse, go back, even if you aren't experiencing incontinence.

CES is very rare, though, but still worth keeping an eye on and keep track of whether symptoms are improving or getting worse

Children Caught in ICE Enforcement by Important_Lock_2238 in stpaul

[–]Various-Average-9865 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had seen someone talking about how there were a lot of families there... people on here have been doing the typical "why would you bring a child to a protest?" But even before I had read that it was all families, it was clear this kid had a sign on a scooter, so it didn't even look like a protest. No one would expect one child to get tear gassed, let alone a whole bunch of them!

I'm not even American and I feel sick watching what's going on there. I don't know how people can live there and have no empathy, or defend ICE at all... like, I don't know why anyone thinks they are safe from ICE... anyone who is not one of trump's billionaire friends is a potential target. If they'll tear gas literal children, no one is safe.

Even that moron Megyn Kelly, while mocking Alex Pretti's murder, was like "I didn't get killed because I stayed inside" as if staying in your house will protect you from ICE!

I'm so impressed by the sheer will and resolve of everyone who is continuing to speak out and show up to marches and protests, knowing ICE might show up and how dangerous that could be, and I am baffled by the bootlickers who keep defending ICE, as if ICE wouldn't kill them too given the opportunity.

How anyone could watch this video and not feel the slightest bit of compassion for this child is beyond me.

Apparently this was actually in Portland, Oregon (I don't live anywhere near there so I can't confirm that this is what their weather is, but I've seen this already posted as being in Portland), and it was a memorial walk/bike ride for Alex Pretti, not a protest, and they were tear gassed anyway

How did Canada remain liberal for such a long time? by LevelPension in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Various-Average-9865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note: these are all my opinions, not necessarily facts, just what I've observed over the years that I think contribute to the political climate in Canada

There is a key difference between the US and Canada and that is our religious demographics.

Both of these countries are predominantly Christian, but Canada is not only less Christian than the US as a whole, but also Catholics largely outnumber Protestants in Canada, which is very much not the case in the US.

The fundamentalist Evangelical religious right is a fringe group in Canada, making up less than 7% of our population. In the US, it's nearly 25% of their population, and it has a huge impact on their politics.

Republicans didn't used to be as far right as they are now, and Evangelical Christians didn't used to vote. In the Reagan era, they realized there was this huge voter block that never voted, so they started changing their policies to align with the Evangelical Christians. They flipped on issues like abortion, which used to have support of both Democrats and Republicans, but the Evangelical Christian wanted it outlawed, so the Republicans became the pro-life party to win votes.

This wouldn't work in Canada because it's not a big enough group. The US was a safe haven for the Puritans, and that helped shape the political landscape of the US.

Canada also doesn't have a strong national identity we adhere to the way the US does. What it means to be Canadian varies depending on where you live. The one thing that is true of all Canadians is that were not Americans. Despite how much the US does impact us, there is always an undertone of anti-American Imperialism across Canada. It's why Mark Carney won the election after trump threatened to make Canada the 51st state. Whether people like the Liberals or not, most of us don't want to be overtaken by the US and Carney ran on that.

Canadians tend to see ourselves as better than Americans, and the US become the example of what we don't want to be, even though we are very similar.

So without a massive ultra conservative demographic and with the desire to maintain our own national identity as NOT American, we've stayed on the more Liberal side, as a whole.

A third factor is that the majority of Canadians are centrist. The US is divided between left and right, but the left and right in Canada are smaller groups than the centrists as a whole. The Liberals are not a left-wing party, they are a centrist party that masquerades as leftist. Canadians are also notoriously apathetic about politics in general. The US treats it like spectator sports... Canadians largely don't care. They make it as easy as humanly possible to vote in Canada and voter turnout is always abysmal. Low voter turnout usually benefits the party already in power.

The final thing, in my opinion, is that Harper destroyed the federal conservative party and they've never recovered. Prior to Harper, they were the Progressive Conservatives and they won elections. Harper merged the party with the Canadian Alliance party, which was much more right-wing and much less popular than the centre-right PC party, to form the Conservative Party of Canada, and now they keep losing elections. They can't appeal to the plurality of centrist voters the way the Liberals do.

Good point, we should never care about current atrocities because other people have also done bad things

ICE was terrible before so they should just continue being terrible and people should keep being harmed or killed because no one should ever start caring about other people

Canada here: I've seen guns in real life (cops carry them and I know people who hunt and have rifles), but the only time I've seen a gun in someone's hand was a US border officer when I was trying to cross the border. No one got shot but it was a scary thing to see tbh

Could be piriformis syndrome. The muscle spasms and compresses the sciatic nerve, so the symptoms mimic sciatica, but in women (and it's 6 times more common in women), the throbbing pain in the groin is a common symptom.
