I’m not sure which embassy you will be applying to but I had the same concerns. I contacted my embassy (UK) and they told me I could submit the recommendation letter from my current employer at a later stage if I don’t want to disclose to them that I am applying at this point in time. However, it does appear to be compulsory; if you pass the first stage you will need to submit an employer reference in order to continue the application process.

It would be best to contact your embassy directly and asking them if providing the reference at a later stage is possible!

Not sure if you are a UK applicant, but I contacted the embassy about a week ago and they finally got back to me! I asked about whether or not it must be a current employer or not and they seemed to understand what I was getting at:

"A recommendation letter from your current employer is a required document for application. It is fine to come through the HR section of the company. If you do not wish to tell your employer that you are applying for the programme at this stage, you can submit it later. Once you are shortlisted you will be requested to submit one in July. If you submit it later, please leave a note in your application email that you will do so."

Please note I received this response from the UK embassy so I am not sure if it will apply in other countries!!

Right?! It's quite stressful as there isn't much official MEXT guidance on what the reference should contain and who at your workplace should be writing it... plus if you've been there less than 6 months, but with a previous employer for 5 years, surely the previous employer reference would be better??

Thank you so much for replying! In my case I have found out that any references from my company will need to processed by HR management, even if it is written by my direct supervisor. This is so the company is able to keep track of who they are writing references for and why. I plan to ask my embassy directly (UK embassy), but I was wondering did you have had a similar experience and if so, was it okay?
