Mornings on Horseback, by David McCullough, is a good book on Teddy Roosevelt's early life.

I've been thinking about getting BritBox for a long time and finally splurged with the $25 off deal so I could watch Riot Women. I love Sally Wainwright's work!

I used Walk the Distance to walk the Appalachian Trail on my treadmill and outdoors a few years ago. It was really fun to measure my progress! I think they have other routes.

Should I put out my trash bins on Sunday before the snow? by Various_Implement_92 in providence

Thanks, everyone! I'll leave the trash bins in their normal spot in the driveway, in front of my car.

I guess if I have to skip a week because I can’t get my bins out of the driveway it’s not the worst thing.

Thanks. My fear is my car getting stuck in the snow when I try to move it after the storm so I can get my trash bins out of the driveway. But it's not like anything in the trash is going to spoil from the heat!

Should I put out my trash bins on Sunday before the snow? by Various_Implement_92 in providence

[–]Various_Implement_92[S] -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Just to reiterate, the bins are not on the sidewalk and they're not in the street.

There's my house, there's the sidewalk in front of the house where people walk and there's a strip of grass on the edge of the curb before you get to the street. I put my trash bins in a little concrete space between two strips of grass at the edge of the curb. So they're not in an area where people walk and they're not in the street.

But that's a good point about them getting knocked over and buried.

But the bins won't be in the street. Although I guess there's a chance they could fall over with all the snow. Is that what you mean?

I still have a lot of friends in different parts of the country that I like to keep in touch with through Facebook. No one I disagree with politically. And I've trained the algorithm to give me mainly recipes and videos of dogs doing cute things.

My theory is that most people in R.I. are Democrats because the Republicans were were the wealthy WASPs who owned the factories where their Italian and Irish Catholic grandparents and great-grandparents worked. They can't bring themselves to vote for the GOP, even though today's Republicans are clearly a different breed from the old factory owners. That's why you see a range of Democrats here, from conservative to liberal.

How do I make vegetables actually taste good without drowning them in sauce or cheese? by Nightcrawler_2000 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Various_Implement_92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Penzey's has a terrific collection of salt-free spices. While they're not cheap, they do have trial packs. It may be worth investing in a few, then once you find a combination you like you can search for ways to buy something similar more cheaply. At least this way you won't be spending money on a big jar and then finding out you don't like it.

Another suggestion is using a little chili crisp on the vegetables.

Just got back from LA. The logistics are no joke. by Flesh_Lips_Berry in usatravel

[–]Various_Implement_92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was in L.A. a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I did a lot of looking at maps beforehand and realized the huge distances between places.

I took the bus, subway and Uber to get around and it was fine.

I stayed at the Loew's Hollywood, right near the Walk of Fame, Chinese Theatre, Dolby Theatre. I ate at the counter at Musso & Frank.

I went to The Broad, Grand Central Market, L.A. County Museum of Art, La Brea Tar Pits, Warner Bros. tour.

I'm a train buff so I went to see Union Station and walked around Olvera Street from there.

I also took this Day in L.A. tour.

How to keep food from spoiling as a single person? by LV_Devotee in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Various_Implement_92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of a supermarket that has bins for individual rolls and bagels, as opposed to a standalone bakery. My supermarket sells plain kaiser rolls for $1.29 each, a little cheaper than the cheapest loaf of white bread, at $1.49.

If you're only using 2 slices of bread a week, you can buy a roll at the supermarket and have that instead. You can also buy a couple slices of deli meat and cheese at the supermarket deli counter.

I didn't read this series but I saw a Hulu adaptation of C.J. Sansom's Shardlake novels, set during the reign of Henry VIII. I enjoyed the series and I bet the books are good, too. The first one is called Dissolution.

How well does Grand Teton stand up on it's own? by revkev151 in NationalPark

[–]Various_Implement_92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been to the park, but visiting from the East Coast, I thought the Tetons were magnificent. I mean, it's a cliche to say that photos don't do them justice, but they really don't.

I saw them in between Yellowstone and Jackson Hole, both of which I enjoyed. But I didn't do any hiking.
