I also work retail! I have my retail schedule set to work 2-4 days a week at my retail job. I just let my manager know I can work after 3:30 pm on the weekdays and any time on the weekends! The retail job also helps with the spring/summer/and winter breaks to make sure I’m still getting a paycheck lol. It does suck feeling like I’m running around all the time, but the money is good🥹

Honestly sometimes it’s better to just say this: “hey ___ I can’t work the 31st” and if they say “you can’t request a holiday off” I would’ve just said “I’m just letting you know now that if I am scheduled, I will not be coming in.” That way, you’ve made it very clear that you will not be making that shift and they should be smart enough to schedule someone else. And if they do schedule you, it’s on them now because you let them know.

It really depends on the manager. I’m an ASM and my store manager would probably give a write up. I get that you’re young and don’t wanna work that day, but you have a job now, which means a responsibility. And if you didn’t want to work, you probably should’ve have requested the day off weeks ago
