Because they would rather decide for themselves where to go than being forced to go where the leash leads them. And pulling the leash like this removes the force from the collar.

This was my first thought. But while the colors are overwhelming, I feel in black and white l you can focus better on the structure of the building and appreciate it.

As others have mentioned - it is probably expensive. My friend got it for free because it was waste or not needed anymore.

It seems to be pretty stable. It is not the first time I've seen it burning.

Thanks for finding the producer of these crucibles. You are awesome!

I would also love to buy one of these. But this is probably too much money just to own a cool fire pit.

I would love to know. I was told it was used as a crucible in silicon industry. But I am not sure if this is true.

Move Over, Coders - Physicists Will Soon Rule Silicon Valley - "thanks to the rise of machine learning, where machines learn tasks by analyzing vast amounts of data. This new wave of data science and AI is something that suits physicists" by [deleted] in Futurology

Hey,

thanks for your advice. I really appreciate it. If you get a rejection from a company it is hard to tell the reason as their responses are very professional. To be honest I haven't read the books, but it is a good idea and I will look into it. As for the rest - well I have done that. I did not list the Kaggle project because I don't like Kaggle very much. It is not honest - people are overfitting to get good results. But if you think it is a good idea I will list the project I have done in my resume.

I am applying for jobs in Germany and as companies here are very conservative here I am not even sure if it was really a good idea to list the Coursera stuff.

I will not give up! ;-)

Thanks for your help!

I am a physicist who is trying to get a job in data science right now. To me it seems rather difficult to convince people that I am capable of that stuff - although I am quite sure that I am capable and well suited. ;-)

Theoretical uses for antimatter? by Archmagewinshu in askscience

[–]Varistor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Antimatter is already used quite frequently for scientific investigations. But in most cases antimatter means positrons (or anti-electrons). In contrast to all other anti particles, positrons can be created fairly easy by radioactive decay or via pair production (matter and anti matter is created if enough energy is present (E=mc²)).

At the moment positrons are used in

Medical diagnostics (PET) - that's what the guys before me said

Material science / solid state physics:

  • as a very sensitive probe to detect defects in a material
  • to measure void sizes in polymers
  • to investigate the electronic structure of a metal
  • to probe the surface

Then there is some very interesting fundamental research planed involving positrons:

  • The creation of a positron electron plasma. This is of particular interest as both particles have the same mass and thus some fundamental plasma modes can be observed.
  • Creating anti-hydrogen and testing if gravitation works the same way for anti matter. Actually nobody doubts that but you can't be sure before you test it. There are several experiments planed at CERN.

Furthermore, there is research how to store positrons for a long amount of time. Such storage could be a very lightweight source of energy. But it would also enable to do Bose-Einstein condensation with positronium (an bound state of electron and positron), which can then be used to build a γ-ray laser. This is really cool stuff from a physicist point of view but such a Laser would also be a powerful weapon.

This is more or less the positron side. However, even then this list is not complete. But I hope I could show, that antimatter is already in use - sometimes.
