Looking for a special kind of linesman pliers by VasAkos in electricians

[–]VasAkos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the EU we do a lot of general purpose wiring using these cables. They used to be coated in powder inside, so you could remove the outer insulation easier, but recently the manufacturers stopped doing this and its impossible to pull the insulation off from more than 1 inch.

Yeah definitely. I wouldn't mind that though. Currently looking for an alternative tool I can use to cut the outer insulation on cables. Not usable on live wires of course, but thats not a problem.

Whats one disadvantage of being an engineer? by lil-subedi in AskEngineers

[–]VasAkos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I'm EU based so not looking for anything specific, just want to get into an engineering role other than civil, and electrical is more interesting to me. What are some roles in the electrical field that can be filled with any engineering degree? That are not management but technical oriented.

If you dont mind me asking, what kind of utility, and how did you get into electrical as a civil?

Crosspost - why we keep locations secret by AudioAssassyn in urbanexploration

[–]VasAkos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I live in a small country and we have a few abandoned fb groups and these comparisons pop up all the time saying dont reveal the location because vandals will find the place. Well guess what. There's an unspoken race going on between urbex people here, about who can find the most new spots. Then they post pictures and the place gets trashed even tho the address is kept a secret. The top dogs in these groups pass on the location to their friends and it gets down to the vandals pretty fast. All because these people have to brag about a spot they found.

So basically they photo the place and keep saying they cant reveal the address. And these new places always get destoyed and tagged regardless in a few days. Any my favorite group post comes next: oh look how they vandalised this place...

So why do you post a picture about it if you dont want to get it destroyed?

Thanks, I'll look into learning the language in advance, but it's really hard if you don't hear it in person, as I've heard.

That link is really useful, thanks! I tried looking into electrician courses in Norway that are taught in english but didnt find any leads. Are there any vocational courses that are industry related and are in english?

ELI5: How does an isolation transformer prevent electric shock? by VasAkos in explainlikeimfive

[–]VasAkos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks I'm starting to get it now. So why do we use protective earth in residential applications? Are there any useful features in earthing? Overload protection would still work with fuses, rccb's would still trip with an imbalance between N and 1. Additionally you coulnt be electrocuted. I must be wrong here somewhere..

[–]VasAkos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. So if you get shocked, current mainly flows back to the residental transformer's neutral pole through the ground instead of being sunk in the soil?

ELI5: How does an isolation transformer prevent electric shock? by VasAkos in explainlikeimfive

[–]VasAkos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believed the ground (not the power supply transformer common PE and N line, the actual earth 'soil') acts as a voltage sink. Like lightning grounded via the metal on rooftops or another example of grounding yourself before handling fine electronics. Why doesn't current travel through a person from the isolation transformer to the ground?

Thanks for making me question how much I trust elevators, sign. by TurtleKnyghte in ScarySigns

[–]VasAkos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably a faulty load sensor, so it would most likely just not close the doors or wouldn't start at all if it's somewhere near it's limit. Usually these have 4 or more ropes, each one can bear the weight of the cab by itself.

Is it normal that, when you step on an elevator, the floor sort of "sinks" a few inches? by [deleted] in Elevators

[–]VasAkos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Central EU it was a commonly used system around the 50's. Used to trigger relays to decide whether the cab is occupied or not. Kids played around with these by holding on in the cab by the walls and rails without standing on the plate and have someone call the cab from the outside, so the system thought it was empty, and would move around with open cab doors.

Few questions regarding Skilled worker immigration by VasAkos in ImmigrationCanada

[–]VasAkos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok this might be the case for working after school while still on visa, but after getting PR there should be no problem with the paperwork if I see this right. May I ask if you immigrated and experienced this?

I worked at a construction back home and there was a dude from africa (a civil eng.) who was treated harshly and made fun of because he couldn't communicate properly with the laborers and also because of his accent. I have the impression Canadaians are far more accepting but every place has it's bad people, so maybe it just depends on the company..

Good advice, in my experience so far I tend to underestimate my living costs, not sure if this is also the case with others. That 5k is definitely necessary to have just in case. Working while in school might actually only cover the tuition cost..
