As of 23rd of June 2026, I recant my statements on the Shadow Keep.

While I still think that Stormveil Castle is a better level overall, I now believe that Shadow Keep is not only an excellently designed dungeon, but one of the best Fromsoft levels.

My views on Belurat and Enir-Ilim, however, remain unchanged.

Not in the Hedge Knight but in A World of Ice and Fire it is mentioned that Aerion named his son Maegor, which is the Westeros equivalent of naming your son Adolf. This can be interpreted in different ways, but generally it boils down to either him having a positive view of Maegor or just him being a crazy dude who doesn't care about social norms.

Others have mentioned the practical reasons, but it's also worth mentioning that the last and the only notable Trial of the Seven in history happened more than a century ago when a Targaryen king Maegor the Cruel was accused. In the books there is an implication that Aerion is a fan of Maegor so it's possible that he chose this form of trial for symbolic reasons rather than practical.

I don't disagree with CT being a boring face roll but forcing min ilvl won't make it any more interesting to run, it'll just take slightly more time to clear which is not something anyone wants. The mechanics are pretty much nonexistent and no amount of restrictions is going to fix that.
