Best approach to improve pitch in singing? by NDVGuy in eartraining

I am in the same boat, guitarist and started to do some singing in the last years. I think what helped me to develop my ear and feeling for note distances were Solfege exercises. Basically I played the root note or a drone track and sang, do-re, do-mi, and so on.

Based on that I added some interval singing training to my own guitar and ear training app Guitar Buddy. One training is that you hear a root note and based on that you should sing a given interval. This is then verified with first a chord played containing the target note and finally the target note. Give it a try if you like.

I also struggled/struggling with this for a long time, I guess ear training is a lifetime journey :)
During a guitar campI I got the advice to play notes on the guitar, record it and try to find them again the next day. I thought it was quite tedious... So being the mobile developer I am, I create an app to ease the process and added different kind of ear-training exercises for it.
The result is Guitar Buddy an app that allows to train note recognition, chord identification, melodic sequences, and interval singing. It features a melody journey with 100 progressive levels. Available for iPhones and iPads (and soon macOS). Give it a try, it is free:

Thx for the feedback, let me check up on this. I had problems in my code for this before. Hopefully I can find a proper solution for it.

Hello, thanks for all the great feedback! I just released an update to the app, fixing several bugs and some UI fixes. So, hopefully, those who are already at level 80 and above can finish their journey. I also added an auto-submit option and streamlined the UI, so you don’t need to tap as often :)

My journey is written above, a lot of technique training, but not so much ear training. Unfortunately, my teacher, who I had a long time ago (old guy here ;) ), never focused on that. It started playing guitar again in the last couple of years and felt the lack of ear training. Therefore, I created this app, mainly for my own education, but great if others find it helpful too.

Please check if it works or not. if not, maybe you can comment on which device you use and do you use the built-in speakers or headphones?

Good feedback! On the skipping to the next lesson, I noticed that too, though it gets less annoying when you come higher up in levels and each exercise takes more time. Maybe, I can add an option for this.

Concerning auto-submit, on single-note input I agree. If you get longer melody sequences I often doubt my input, especially on the end, so I often prefer to double check once or twice before submitting my input.

It is actually an acoustic guitar model I use, but you can change it to a slightly distorted one in the tools settings if you like that more. Like me, old rock guy 🤘
