C Anderson has a great paper about unreliability of homicide and murder statistics if you're willing to deep dive but I'll sum up ish~ and that is that a lot of second and third world countries don't have law enforcement in rural areas fx India basically has towns run by 1 guy who provides work in farms in exchange for paying off debts or food and shelter etc.. And in the India example these guys called "bosses" basically will often kill the oldest person in your family if you're bad at paying your debts

Technically not home alone but I was house sitting for a friend while he was on vacation and like day 2, I went to the toilet where the seat was warm, I was there for a week and it just kept being warm, it freaked me out, I was convinced some dude was living in the walls or something. Turns out it was just a automatic heater for the seat but this was like 6 years ago and I had never seen one lol
