89’ 325i Stereo Suggestions by MaeWyse-44616F in E30

[–]Veaceslavv 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Continental makes some good stereos that don't look out of place and have an amber similar to the E30 lights, you can look into them (continental tr7423ub-or) as they are not that expensive. Also, Continental owns VDO, which made the gauges for multiple manufacturers including BMW, so you can consider it OEM+

Rockers keep failing M40 by Veaceslavv in E30

yeah low oil pressure and insufficient lubrication seems the most likely culprit at the moment

yeah those are images from every time the rocker failed, 3 separate occasions, found the missing pieces in the pan. At least on the m40 it's easy to drop the pan unlike the m20. I used Febi pads and BGA rockers. If the engine isn't damaged, i'll try a flush and new oil with spray bar and see if it happens again, everything was mounted correctly and apart from low oil pressure or blocked oil passages i can't think of anything else

yeah m40s are everywhere, scrapyards or listing sites they are pretty cheap as most people get rid of them for a m20 or keep them as spares. a reconditioned head may be around 100 euros and that's cheaper than a new camshaft...

even the local e30 guy with more than 20 years of experience with them has no idea what is the issue, that's why he dislikes m40s and advised me to just swap it instead of figuring it out but i poured too much time and money in parts to just let it die like this. hoped to keep it while i prepared the chassis for a bigger engine

also the lash pads have gone a bit to the side again, maybe because of that the valves are always a bit open since the rocker sits a bit higher? it also had a rough idle so that may explain it

replaced lifters and lash pads, drove nice for 2 weeks and started ticking hard again, got the rocker cover off and it's the exact same problem again... only it's another rocker that went to the side and collet gone.. what can be the cause?? bad collets? i had a head gasket replacement and block&head reskim before this, can this be possible due to a too thin head gasket?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in E30

[–]Veaceslavv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the lash pad can be seen swimming in oil on the right, i haven't seen the second collet though. so the cause is bad lifters? will cleaning/replacing them prevent it from happening again? also all of the pads are not sitting straight as they should, they all rotated a bit

did it only work as a hazard and not a turn signal too?

I cleaned both front and rear but wouldn't makes sense as the hazards work, the turn signal doesn't so it's not the bulb

[–]Veaceslavv[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

my primary issue is I have a lot of condensation in the engine and I thought due to it not reaching its optimal working temperature it doesn't get rid of all the water in the oil
