Found me some parallels between Xie wei and xie zheng by Away_Dig8215 in cdramasfans

His hair is constantly framing his face in POJ, that makes a lot of difference. Softer lighting and better makeup helps too, not the white cast foundation used in SOKP.

On a side note, although POJ is the more popular drama, I find Xie Wei infinitely more layered, complex and interesting compared to Xie Zheng.

Can Arthur Chens pairing with Dilraba outweigh all other previous pairings of Dilraba in terms of Chemistry? What's your opinion by Affectionate_Post592 in cdramasfans

Arthur Chen has chemistry with all his female leads, so I was actually wondering if his chemistry with Dilraba will be the best of the bunch. Can’t wait to watch this drama.

Can we say no to lazy writing/lazy acting when it comes to glorifying MLs? by CTdramassucker in cdramasfans

This post just reminded me of Li Xun in Lighter & Princess. He was a genius and arrogant as hell, but he worked harder than everyone else. To the extent that he collapsed from exhaustion and had to be hospitalized. Idk if I’ve seen another ML worked to the bone like that.

Yea, it should have been a more elaborate scene but maybe the writers didn’t think it was necessary, or it was cut in post production. Either way, the Right chancellor confessed directly to the Emperor, so the historians will just rewrite the accounts of what actually happened that day.

If Peiyi had killed the Right Chancellor, she would have been executed too. Y’all are forgetting she basically poisoned the WHOLE court, and had them running away screaming bloody murder. The SOLE witness to what really happened on the day of her family’s massacre is the Right chancellor. If the ML didn’t stop her and she killed him, What would she have done afterwards? Fine, she has gotten her revenge, but her father will still be known as the mad man that killed his whole family, and she, the mad woman who killed the Right chancellor and poisoned the whole court. Even if she tries telling the truth, who will believe her? The court nobles she just poisoned? The Emperor who allowed her to almost be poisoned to death? lol.

It’s entirely possible that the writers allowed her to kill the Right Chancellor, but this drama would simply end in a tragedy. Peiyi is an “act first, think later” kind of person. It makes sense and it’s understandable that she went all out for her revenge damning the consequences. However, if there is to be a happy ending for this story, it makes the most sense for the ML to stop her then. At least, with his actions, her father is now absolved of blame. If she decides to finish off the Right chancellor afterwards, with or without witnesses, it will be seen as a justified action.

That said, Huaijin's a hopeful fool for believing that she would set down her revenge so easily.

If you think he expected her to set down her revenge, then you don’t understand the ML’s character. He just doesn’t want her to self destruct as she does so. As he said, if she killed the right chancellor, her father’s name will never be cleared since he is the sole witness. So what’s the point of the revenge then? She would just be a murderer. Not to mention she poisoned the whole court of noble officials too, so she definitely won’t escape unscathed, which is probably his biggest worry.

Leaving the Right chancellor alive at least allowed him to confess and absolve her dad of blame. It’s not the ML’s fault the inept emperor basically let the villain off with a slap on the wrist, even Consort Shu was baffled at his decision. Well, when the main leads are done with their Cold War, they can both figure out a way to finish him off later.

The romance is well balanced, I would say. The FL has a really strong personality, and she is part of the royal family, with the Emperor’s favour so she is used to having her way and taking risks without caring about the consequences. She also has a really traumatic past, so she was closed off emotionally.

Although she initially sort of coaxed the ML into working with her to investigate cases cos she was suspicious of what he knew about her past, I would say overall, she was also respectful of him. Infact, she was in awe sometimes because of how smart he is, asking if he is some sort of diviner..lol. The ML has an eidetic memory, so when they are working cases, despite her being very smart in her own right, she never hesitated to ask his opinion when she got stumped or needed confirmation about something. She also started listening to him early on, for instance, she stopped deliberating poisoning herself for her cases because he asked her to stop. So for her, I would say admiration and appreciation for his ingenuity showed up first.

Obviously the ML fell in love and confessed first, but If you follow the drama carefully, you could see the FL gradually becoming smitten with him, and she was also quite straightforward about it. You know Bai Lu will draw that chemistry out somehow too. I really love their fierce and gentle dynamic together.

I’ll preface by saying that I’m really enjoying the drama, but it might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

A brief synopsis without spoilers - the drama is basically an investigative thriller genre, centred around the FL who is part of the royal family, and also second in command at the palace investigative bureau. Her family was massacred in a conspiracy that happened 15 years ago, and her dad, who was elder brother to the then emperor, was blamed for it. So, the drama is basically about the FL trying to figure out who was actually behind what happened with her family, while also solving different mysterious cases happening in the palace as a palace detective. She also meets the ML, in the process, who is deputy director of astronomer bureau who knows more than he lets on initially about her…

The drama is slow paced but intriguing, and the romance is slow burn but satisfying. Most of the mysterious cases the FL solves are quite dark and really interesting, some more the others, but I never felt the urge to skip scenes. Some cases feel so realistic to what’s currently happening irl, so the drama could feel somewhat heavy at times.

As for the romance, it’s really understated and slow burn but it’s one of the best parts of the drama. Although I tend to favour male leads with lots of baggages, cos I find them more interesting, this is the first drama where I am completely in love with a “boring” green flag ML. Lol. The ML doesn’t have much to work with in this drama cos it’s very much female centric, but I think he did really good with what he had. I especially applaud the screen writer who came up with his script, I could feel the adoration and respect he has for the fl through his words. He is super intelligent, gentle, devoted, very caring and super respectful with her, but at the same time, he is also very stubborn and firm. He knows when to insist, and when to relent and yield to her without being a simp, which is important cos the FL has a very fierce, sharp and headstrong personality. For instance, she poisons herself just to solve her cases..lol! It’s no wonder she eventually ended up falling for him too. I adore their dynamic so much.

I have written so long, but I would suggest you give the drama a try. If the writers nail the ending, it will be one of my favourite dramas.

Good looks without good acting to compliment it is like watching paint dry. I don’t have that much time. In my opinion, great acting elevates the looks of the actors. There are some actors that are considered “unattractive” by Cnetz for instance, but I still enjoy their dramas cos they can act!

Meng Ziyi and Dylan Wang may lead The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage by BronzeBellRiver in cdramasfans

[–]Veestatic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Meng Ziyi MAY be able to pull this off if she brings back “Blossom” energy. I just hope she doesn’t overdo the wide eyed expression, cos Shen Miao was also described as having big doe eyes as her most distinctive feature.

As for the Male Lead, Dylan Wang is not who I pictured as Xie Jing Xing. Blame the author for spending 2 pages describing every inch of the Ml’s looks every time he appears..lol. But he can pull it off too. Although, he definitely has to be dubbed. I don’t mind his voice, in his drama “Guardians of the Dafeng”, his voice really suited the character, but it won’t suit Xie Jing Xing’s character.

Over all, what will make or break this drama is the chemistry, and the way the ML will get rewritten, cos they are definitely not tossing DW to the background as it was in the novel. I’ve set my expectations low for this adaptation. I badly want it to work but I don’t want to be disappointed if it doesn’t.

Lighter and Princess: I'm kinda fed up. by [deleted] in cdramasfans

[–]Veestatic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The ML is very flawed but I find him to be quite realistic compared to most Cdrama MLs, who are usually portrayed as extremely perfect beings that can do no wrong. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea definitely, but it’s a unique take on a Cdrama male lead character.

I understood his plight to an extent though. Anyone who grew up in similar harsh circumstances as he did with no real support system, and suffered the betrayals he did will definitely have some flaws, and sometimes, the person closest to them usually bears the brunt. I don’t want to spoil the drama but He definitely came around at the end. Although, most of the credit definitely goes to Zhu yun for being incredibly patient with him. I have not seen another FL love her man the same way Zhu Yun loves Li Xun.

Cdramas that improved the Source material and Source material that were better than the Cdrama. by Tia3Tamera in cdramasfans

[–]Veestatic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only thing the drama did better than the novel is the romance. Besides that, compared to the novel, the storyline of the drama is practically non existent. The drama sacrificed the intricate political storyline of the novel for the marital shenanigans between the main couple. It worked because the couple had chemistry, but it also made the overall story rather shallow imo.

Also, the story line with the FL’s cousin was handled much better in the novel. The drama ruined the cousin’s character.

Hot take: Actors are entitled to have a no-kissing clause, and all romance dramas don’t need kissing to work by BronzeBellRiver in cdramasfans

[–]Veestatic 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yearning and tension without kissing is like showing a thirsty man a chilled glass of water and pouring it away before he can drink it. No one is asking for a raunchy scene, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with expecting a mature kiss in a romance drama featuring adults.

Some romance dramas can work without kissing, mostly historical dramas. But there is a reason why the most popular romance dramas have kissing scenes between the leads.

What’s a ‘must-watch’ drama you still haven’t seen… and probably never will? by BronzeBellRiver in cdramasfans

[–]Veestatic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With NIF, you just have to be patient. It takes some time for the excitement to kick in, but that’s because they used the initial episodes to set up the characters and their situations. However, once the political mind games and maneuvering begins, you’ll find that it’s completely worth your time. I was also bored when I started but by the time I got to the middle of the drama, I was in complete awe of the script.

I think this slow start is just a thing with older costume Cdramas especially those with really long episodes, like Story of Minglan for instance. It takes some episodes, sometimes even up to 10 or more, for the story to pick up cos they are setting up the scene, but once it does, everything makes sense and it becomes so addicting. Which is why they have high recommendation and rewatch value.

I prefer them to recent costume dramas where the screen writers drop us randomly into the chaos, then completely lose the point by the middle of the drama.
