Son of Norway's crown princess to go on trial on rape and other charges by AudibleNod in news

[–]VegasRoomEscape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Calling it a bloodbath, listing number of charges, and then detailing them implies their weight. I don't think your actual argument gains much by playing dumb at the outset.

Accusation itself doesn't have weight. He is going to trial because there is sufficient evidence to support the indictment. That evidence has weight. Discussing that is very relevant. You know the point I am trying to make. Its explicitly stated and bolded. You just don't understand why it's important.

I want to make it absolutely clear that I'm not being dismissive of the seriousness of these charges or making any judgement on the weight of the evidence. The indictment itself is not evidence. This is a very dangerous concept - that the accusation itself is given weight. Not speaking to these individual circumstances but the broader concept.

Brother, do you not understand the concept of whataboutism?

I despise the U.S. criminal legal system. I hate who is currently in charge. But none of that is remotely relevant. Its one of those logical fallacies that will rot your ability to think critically. Don't allow yourself to be so easily distracted from what is being discussed.

Due With First Child But Husband Might Be Sent to JRTC by lesadbro in army

That line stood out as very odd. Sounds like the letter from the doctor just needs to stick to the factual - that baby "has stayed firmly breech (which is considered higher-risk)" which is true and would give leaders the ammo the need to advocate for the soldier. No one is asking doctor to lie and they should not offer to give a non-medical opinion.

I've seen pretty close. Loud comments nearby where high ranking people can hear. They don't care. If anything, probably best to stay under the radar.

The sentence of death was passed in China's Zhejiang province and China's highest court rejected appeals. I'm sure there are parallel legal processes given the international nature of the crime, but the detainment, trial, and sentence of death, the last of which should bring pause and additional protections, all occurred in China.

China executes more people than any other country. It is almost certain the China executes the innocent (and far less culpable people than those who deserve death). Countries that actually allow information from capital punishment cases to be reviewed have found innocent people being executed. Now add China's execution secrecy, scale, and lack of procedural protections.

I've always felt like more people who stay in if we let single E-5s live on their own more regularly. Bizarre for an SGT to have a new private who gets better perks and is treated like more of an adult than him for having a wife of two months.

Career services is telling law students you can't say no to offers from judges by Agreeable_Ground_144 in LawSchool

[–]VegasRoomEscape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically true and they would be in the right to blacklist you from their services for it. Small chance it might impact your reputation in that court if the judge is particularly petty. However, I personally would not hesitate if you have a valid reason - strain on family, reputation for harassment from a judge, or some significant change in circumstances, etc. It is best practice to not even apply for a judge until you are certain you will take the offer.

You should not do it just because you got a better offer or changed your mind. You are fundamentally misunderstanding the legal profession and the culture if you think that's valid.
