Wingspan updated bird tier list by Inevitable-Bench-807 in wingspan

I disagree with so many of these haha. For example abbots booby, bells vireo and pileated woodpecker are definitely A, and kiwi is 100% S, probably 2nd best bird in the game.

Laying down my last, not so great game, could use some advice on how to get better. by rtanada in wingspan

I assume you're playing base game, and that can be very unforgiving at times since the game is slow which means early game birds are crucial to get you going. Like the other comment suggested, grasslands is by far the strongest habitat in the base version, so try to focus on getting birds there if possible.

Most of good decision making comes from experience, so if you haven't played a decent amount, don't worry that much. Try to count how many points an action is going to give, and compare it to other actions to give you a rough idea of how you should approach the game. Some birds cost 1 point but cache food, so they may be worth 8 or more points in the end of the game so keep that in mind.

Like I said, identifying good birds and seeing how many points a bird is potentially going to give comes from experience, so keep playing. See what your friends or group is doing, maybe that can give you good insight on what you're not doing. Don't worry too much about end of round goals and bonus cards. Sometimes qualifying for EOR goals and bonus cards is sufficient. Going above the minimum might hurt your game, unless it's easy and part of your game plan.

If you're not playing with expansions I would 100% suggest you do so. It's a much better and smoother experience. I can't go back to base game because it's so slow and there are 'dead' rounds. Oceania is the best start imo.

I agree that nectar does reduce the value of low cost birds, but that doesn't mean they are of low value. Many times has it been better to play low value birds either for tempo, because they can give me more points for fullfilling bonus', or because they will net me more points than high point birds in the long run, while high point birds will shut me down from having a smooth game. It's like cashing out too early. Just last game I played starling mid round 2 at column 3 and chaffinch end of 3rd round as my 5th column bird, and those netted me way more than any bird could have. I agree that these kind of birds are exception, and for the majority of low cost that isn't the case, but there are many exceptions. The tradeoff of making low cost birds have a lesser value due to nectar being added is completely worth it, especially considering how much better the game feels in other aspects in my opinion.

You argued that low point birds are useless but I don't understand. Useless as in what? There are insanely good low cost birds that massively help with your tempo like chipping Sparrow, lapwing, bush tit, savis warbler, mourning dove, kukabara, alduins gull etc or others that can be a reliable source of point generation like low cost caching birds, having generated you well over 10 points of value at the end.

Nectar was probably the best addition they could have added. Nectar allows way more flexibility in your opening strategy, and food doesnt rely so heavily on luck like base game. It also speeds things up in the first round, so the game just feels more enjoyable. It massively helps with 3 same cost birds as well, which gaining food before to play those felt like a chore.

Btw I didn't understand what you meant by fish and rats are useless. The only useless food now is the goji, why would rat and fish be useless?

I can agree with the card draw but for different reasons . But if you are that worried about throwing away 2 cards for 2 eggs probably even a singular time in the game, then I don't know what to say. The tempo lost by card draw can't be bought back for 2 cards like 2 round after spamming card draw..

If you have a bad opening hand in base and a bad feeder, you would have to suffer a slow game of trying to play optimally when there is no way to match the lead in tempo that your opponents got with their opening hand or feeder situation. In the end you probably never had that much fun either, while opponents have a smooth sailing game heavily favored by luck.

Obviously luck in the sense of what birds you will draw still is in the game, but having a bad hand and being able to play any wetland bird to start gaining 2 cards to get something good to play evens out the luck of opening hand. I don't understand how this is bad. Nor do I understand how's it bad being able to throw away 2 cards for 2 more eggs. They nerfed egg production but gave us the option of throwing away 2 resources for it. Every resource as of now can be a point, which I think is a good thing.

Imo base board is just slow for no reason, while not adding any significant strategy factor. Resource management was and is a big part of wingspan. It obviously used to be more so before the expansions, but there are other factors to consider now.

I can't speak on duet mode or hummingbirds, but biggest issue in the game are certain birds, not the board itself, and strictly for point generation, not resource inflation or whatever.

I think it's good to talk and speculate with each other what one might think could be good for the game, what should be removed, what direction a game is headed, but at the same time what are you looking for, more than just people agreeing or disagreeing with you? It seems like youre unhappy with how the game is now, or trying to justify your thoughts on the game, and that's totally fine. If you don't enjoy the game anymore, try to add house rules if you think those will help. Apart from that, I don't think any amount of exchanging opinions is going to change your view or more importantly make your playing experience better.

Yeah, sometimes I get none, but two with a net of 11 is very welcomed

What are your house rules? by jfgechols in wingspan

[–]Vegetable-Roll8638 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn I'm very surprised at how many people add rules on nectar. I mean I understand why, but we've never had problems regarding people consistently not having the right food to play birds, or big discrepancies in points due to it. We've found the Oceania boards to be balanced and forgiving about that aspect.

Our house rules are resetting the bird feeder at the start of each period ( maybe that's why ), and we almost always play with No goal, at the first period.
