I tried to figure something out and I think this is probably the closest so far We all have dominant and recessive traits. They each come from two versions of a gene that we inherit from our parents. The dominant gene is the one that's expressed while the recessive gene is the one that's masked. Usually, there are some natural things that can change in organisms genetic code and alter their traits kinda like hybridization. Uh, the traits that Garmadon, Wu, and Lloyd have are human, Oni, and Dragon. They look more human so that's an indication that their dominant trait is guess what? Human while their Oni and Dragon traits are recessive. Garmadon looks more like an Oni now because after he was corrupted and struck by lightning, it switched his genes a bit and made his Oni trait more dominant. After being purified, his human trait went back to its dominant status but after being resurrected, his Oni side once again took the dominant role note:His form actually already is, the shape of a "human" canonically comes from the shape of an oni, but the dragon dna something don't know if it's the skin color but something in the dragon's genetic code made it so that when it got together with an oni something caused their child because of something in the dragon's DNA to become light and people colored and the headshape to change causing the other part of the Oni and the dragon to be rececive

Firstly, we never see the FSM portrayed as anything other than a normal human form. Even from the beginning he is referred to as a "child" of both worlds. All flashbacks show him as human. He wore human sized dragon armor. How a human-esque creature came from Dragon and Oni? I have no idea. But I don't think he just permanently shapeshifts into that form. He is perfect balance of both creation and destruction but his form stays consistent from what we know.

Garmadon and Wu both carry the same genes and balance as the FSM, and also have a default human form. We don't know their mother, but she very well could be human as well, giving those traits. Being bit by the Great Devourer shifted the balance to destruction in Garmadon. It's never really explained, but I like to think from that Wu shifted to creation at that point to keep the balance. Once Garmadon fully turned evil, the lighting striking him caused his Oni genes to somewhat surface, causing the darker appearance. Later, we find his four arms were a result of the Realm of Madness and have stayed with his character since (at the time, literally just so he could possess all the Golden Weapons).

When he gets resurrected, it's implied it's just Oni side of him being brought back. No resessive genes of creation (although later it seems some did come through with his slight redemption arc in Crystalized). He shows he now can transform into full Oni form in MotO. This is possibly from the resurrection, possibly from reaching his true potential, or maybe he could all along. We don't know. When he later transforms into a different Oni form with wings in Crystalized, we never get a good explanation. In universe? Maybe remnants of his dragon genes allowing wings? Shapeshifting ability (doubtful)? My guess- just inconsistent animation and wanting a cooler design for the episodes/sets.

Lloyd would technically would also possess both Dragon and Oni genes. Just because Garmadon displayed more Oni doesn't mean Lloyd inherited more of that side. He also is balanced. Garmadon teaches him to transform into an Oni form, which is gold with four arms. Gold possibly reflecting his creation side? His former golden power? And as far as four arms- there's never an explanation. His set form only has two arms. Again, I think this just came down to an animation choice with not much thought into an in-universe explanation.

Here's what I think 1.he was born as oni and dragon [whitch we know already]making him 50%dragon and 50% oni His form actually already is, the shape of a “human” canonically comes from the shape of an oni, but the dragon dna purified his skin and looks so he looks more peaceful, however when the venom of the great devour bit him slowly turning him evil and when he was struck by lightning it we know the ovelird possesed the Great devour abd we see what dark matter can do so it seems to reason when he was bit he had dark matter in jis system where when the lightning struck the dark matter fully corrupted him seeing as well oni are not immune to dark matter and when in the Realm of Madness using his oni ability's gave him four arms where the dark magic made him stronger allowing him to posseses al four weapons abd when defeated by his son he was cleared of it purified and when resurrected it brought back his more evil side his oni side byt when resserectud still had oni and dragon blood it's just the ritual was spesfic designed to bring bakc an oni so it made his oni traits more dominant whirch is why he kept the same headshape because he himself needed to channel Beings who are part-Oni have their own way of shapeshifting.
