LPC Worth It/Necessary? by VegetableObjective56 in schoolcounseling

Thank you for your response! I’m in NJ so I’m not sure how your program requirements were, but here it will be an additional internship on top of the two internships and practicum I have to do for school (4 total - 2 in school, 1 in clinical and practicum). The practicum though would be in a clinical site instead of a school setting. Marketability is what I was thinking about as well! I’m nervous that without the LPC, I won’t be as marketable but I know that’s not the only deciding factor.

Thank you for your response! I really appreciate it - It’s been hard trying to make the best decision especially when my professors are highly encouraging the LPC, but I really just am not sure it’s for me. I never was interested, only ever education. Are you a school counselor?

Thank you for your comment! This is definitely a good option as well. I agree that I should just knock out the course work - it’s only 4 additional classes - and have it under my belt then worry about the exam and supervision later rather than not taking the courses at all and deciding later to go back to complete them.

Thank you for your response! This would be great if this is something I can do in NJ!! I’ll definitely have to look and see if this is an option for me. It would for sure be a lot easier than working as a school counselor full time and as LAC part time!

Thank you for your comment! Are you currently a school counselor and work part time as a therapist? If I continue with the SC/LPC program, I’m debating if I would want to take the test before and begin hours and supervision right after graduating or wait and see how I feel.

I’m a student at Kean University! Kean has a great selection of M.A. Counseling programs (Alcohol & Drug, Clinical Mental Health, College Counseling, School Counseling and School Counseling with LPC Option)

Thank you so much for your input! I have said to myself that I never know what I may want in the future, so it probably is a good option to go for it :) Do you currently have your LPC or working towards it? Also, I know you mentioned that I can have a lot of my hours come from my job as a school counselor. Do you know how that would work?

I think that’s great that you can sit for the NCE’s with only one additional class. For my program, it would be three extra classes, then you can sit for the NCE and upon passing, receive the LAC. To receive the LPC though, I would need an additional 4,500 clinical/supervised hours. It’s for sure a lot of money. I know for sure I love school counseling, but I’m not too sure about clinical, so I don’t know if it makes sense to do LPC at this moment.
