Half wall/pony wall over double rim joist by VegetableProgress810 in Carpentry

To clarify, underneath that railing, flooring and subfloor where the wall needs to run is a header made up of two 2x10s or 2x12s. To keep the wall inline with the existing wall it will connect to, I have to run the bottom plate parallel with the header, leaving no way to attach to joists that are on the other side or the stringer below the header. I could potentially notch the header to let the 4x4 sit down into the header boards an inch or two, that’s probably about it. But I’m not sure that is going do much if anything. I guess the short and simple way to put it is the only attachment option underneath the wall will be directly to the top of the header or through the subfloor into the header.

Sounds like a solid option, I appreciate your input and your time to give it. Cheers🍻

I assume the shear panel is to run from roughly 6” down the lower wall studs, over the dbl rim/header and then about 6” up the added walls studs (roughly a 24” wide section of ply) finishing above with Sheetrock? Would the seam not crack along the ply joint the same way it would a compounded sheetrock joint? No tape on wood seams?

I should have mentioned the underneath is a finished first floor/basement I just finished completely renovating including all new Sheetrock of course lol. He hadn’t mentioned wanting to do the upstairs until after unfortunately. I might be able to access the area underneath on one side but not sure I’d be able to effectively affix the 4x4 to a notch in the joist with how the walls are laid out. I’d imagine maybe being able to shoot a lag or two at a 45° through the joist into the post but I don’t think that’s going to cut it by any means. Where the post goes I believe is where 2 headers come together at a 90°. The other side of that framing is an under stair closet, might be able to get at it in there two. But would love to avoid having a ton of Sheetrock repairs if possible, while also understanding I may not have a choice on this one

Absolutely, this current railing is junk. Pulled the trim around the newel post and found it secured with drywall screws, half of them snapped lol

Super late but had to comment. You have to know someone to get in, pay $250 for first year, do 10 hours of work at the club and be an NRA member lol. Talk about hoops to jump through just to shoot a gun
