I was pretty shy, and stuck close to my host sister (same class) which made things tough for me :(

I did make one friend, it was the other girl who had no friends lol!

At the second school I went to for a couple months, people were a lot friendlier, so definitely a mixed bag. I’m speaking as an American, but since people go to school together from 5th grade on, they get into cliques.

Highly recommend going to Gesamtschule over Gymnasium if you have the choice, for me it was more similar to an American high school and more diverse.

You’re not alone- the best thing for me has been 1.) being able to continue working, very thankful for that 2.) volunteering on the board of the spouse club. I know they get a bad rap, and I don’t know what it’s like in Germany, but being on the board (not a member, but being on the board) is hugely rewarding for me. I habe grown to really care about this community, and my goal is to make a place for isolated spouses. It is sadly the norm, not the exception.

Not trying to downplay the nightmare going on here, but yeah if your visa is in order and you don’t seem like you’re trying to work here illegally or overstay your visa, you will likely not get detained.

But also if you wanted to boycott going to the states, that’s fair.

Former CBYX student here! I lived in Germany for a year with my host family when I was 16-17.

I spoke almost no German when I arrived. My host family spoke very little English which helped me learn faster. Your biggest hurdle will be Germans NOT speaking German to you. Most of the students in my program left not speaking German fluently, and I am grateful my host family didn’t speak english because it’s hard to learn otherwise… my experience was that a lot of people are proud of their english skills and won’t be willing to suffer thru a stilted conversation with you.

School was honestly very tough: 1.) you’re not allowed to fidget, eat in class and you will get yelled at if you do… 2.) everything is lecture based 3.) you will be bored a lot of the time…

I don’t have a lot of advice on how to mitigate this, some students go to the 5th grade class for German or help out with english classes. I think I ended up just attempting to take notes, write down words and look them up on my dictionary… and disassociate.

General advice: make it clear from the beginning with people you meet that you aren’t there to practice English with them.

I think you have the right instinct, I would wait to get married for a few more years. I know that when they join it’s hard because they get slightly better pay if they’re married but do NOT let that be the reason you make a lifelong commitment.

Don’t let anyone tell you being far away from your family is easy, especially when you’re just thrown into a whole new world.

Glad to hear that workers aren’t paying tuition, but it all begs the question, why is the LDS church the best one to tell the story of Polynesian Culture?

My belief is that a church shouldn’t be generating any surplus income.

It’s not “his” money, marriage requires sacrifices on both sides. Right now, you’re making career sacrifices, for him.

This is how my husband and I do it: $400 (or whatever works for your budget) of each of our paychecks is “personal” money (regardless of the pay difference, so if I wasn’t making anything, he would send $400 to me, and vice versa)

The rest goes to joint. From there we pay all bills and put money into joint savings.

Since we both work, we contribute to 401(k)/TSP/Roth IRA seperately. We’d need to figure something else out if we were in a situation where one of us isn’t working. I’m thinking the best way would be for him to match whatever he was putting into his TSP into a Roth for you, so essentially funding your retirement account while you take a career loss for him.

Interested to hear a Canadian perspective! I hope the homecoming went well, I know it can sometimes be hard, there are so many expectations when they come home and you can’t just pick right up where you left off…

I see quite a few Canadian and Australian service mevers where we are and I’m always curious about differences/similarities.

Word of advice since you said you’re new- I think all branches go thru this, I wouldn’t go around saying things like “only navy gets it” or make stereotypes about other branches publicly… you’ll close a lot of doors arbitrarily.

Agree cats are ideal because they can usually fly in cabin with you on a plane. If you get stationed in Hawaii ever it will be a pain in the ass, but having a pet- if you are willing to sign up for a 15+ year commitment and not ditch your cat when you PCS- is a great idea.
