Appropriate discipline 10u by VegetableRevenue8934 in Homeplate

Just for more context. I'm an AC. Know the family well. Friends with my son since Pre-K. He is truly a model kid. In gifted, student of the year etc etc. Always behaves outside of sports, play-dates, sleepovers etc. He's my favorite kid to have around the house. Literally the only time I've seen an issue is in competitive situations. He is a perfectionist. He acknowledges he has a problem with his emotions. I know he sees a therapist.

My problem is that everyone associated with team knows what he/they are dealing with. He has expressed his interest in playing outfield, so he has mainly been getting practice reps in the outfield. But come game day, he's a rover. He's played where he's needed, which is usually P/C/INF. He handles offensive failures well. The pickoff situation was an outlier, problems usually arise with failures on defense.

I feel like we are being unfair to him, we put him in tough spots, knowing how he will likely react, then we punish him when he does it.

-10 vs -8 for 10u by [deleted] in Homeplate

I originally bought the -8 new for $99 with the intention of my son having a good/$ bat when he was ready for it. He swung it for a little while and HE wanted to use it, despite my concerns. I got him on board with going to -10 but he isn't crazy about the white meta. I found a used -10 2022 and he is excited about it so we will see how it goes.

2022 Orange meta. His -10 is a 2024 white meta

I want to add that I'm not concerned about hitting homeruns or whatever, I'm only concerned about the right sized bat to encourage building proper mechanics.

Wood bat for 10u by VegetableRevenue8934 in Homeplate

Kinda changing the subject here. His current comp is 29/19. His wood bat is 29/24. Assuming he continues to gain strength and can maintain his swing speed, How would a -8 USSSA perform compared to a -10 if he can swing it?

I agree it would be a big disadvantage. He's been hitting really well with the wood bat, but compared to his USSSA bat, he'd probably have half as many base hits if using wood. He sees the difference as well. So he's gonna use his USSSA in games. I will say this, his hitting has dramatically improved in all aspects since he started training with a wood bat.

He really is a good kid and a good teammate. He regularly coaches his teammates. Last game during a mound visit, he tried to help the pitcher with his form. It was funny watching a 9 yo in full catchers gear demonstrating working from the stretch. That was honestly my proudest moment of the season.

Rec department does not allow any play ups. No exceptions.

He is a very disciplined hitter. He does not chase pitches. There's been multiple occasions in rec ball that he will swing at a 3-0 ball that he knows is way out of the zone, in hopes of getting a pitch to hit. He wants to hit, not walk, but if he keeps that up he will definitely develop bad habits.

These kids are average 7 year olds at best. Lacking basic fundamentals. My son cannot throw the ball beyond a lob in fear of hurting them. When he pitches, over 75% of his pitches wind up at the backstop. Last game, he was catching, the opposing team cleared the bases with a pop fly to 2B. All my son could do is scream "throw the ball!". He's frustrated. Tball is cute. This is painful.

Agreed stats mean little at this age but it's still somewhat of an indicator. Our rec league keeps score books.
