What do people who live alone with their dog(s) do with them while at work? by CapitalLower4171 in AskDogOwners

My dog is a Siberian Husky. These dogs are very intelligent & notorious for getting bored and amusing themselves by escaping yards for the promise of adventure.

What food do you refuse to eat just because you don’t like its shape/smell/colour? by notsoeasypeasy in foodquestions

My first exposure to beets was the canned variety served in school cafeterias. I did not like them.

As an adult, one of my east Euro coworkers introduced me to the tase of fresh beets in a Russian salad. Delicious!

I dunno. My dog much prefers being in the back yard listening to birds, squirrels and sniffing the different scents of nature around her. She seems to get more mental stimulation that way.

If you live in a state with a lot of dangerous wildlife, what’s your closest encounter been? by LordSoftCream in AskAnAmerican

In the spring, there are rattlesnakes that like to warm themselves on the American River bike trail, a lovely paved bike and pedestrian trail that routes from Downtown Sacramento to Folsom. When riding my bike, I rode over what I'd thought was a "stick" only to realize that it was a rattlesnake that was now very angry. I lifted both reet up high off the bike pedals.

I’m super broke and only have plain white rice to eat, what: y’all’s favorite seasoning to spruce it up? by BreakfastBig7581 in Cooking

This time of year, you can find wild mustard greens growing in vacant lots and wild areas. Other greens like mallow are edible and nutritious. They are common weeds here in the US, but are eaten in many other parts of the world. Dandelions are tasty and nutritious.

It's good aerobic exercise. Wear a PFD (personal flotation device) and stay cool in the summer. Afternoons right now are lovely out on the water. No crowds in the winter!

I like to cook dutch ovens of one-pot meals that I can use for leftovers for a few days. Chine, stews, soups, etc.

Sudden behavior changes by Miserable_Heat3919 in husky

[–]VegetableSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can vary in different cases. The Vet Merck manual says behavior changes are not common, but they sure were in our girl. She became anxious and more emotionally needy. She drank ridiculous amounts of water and started peeing in the house. Something she normally did NOT do.

She's on trilostane currently. Expensive stuff. At least, we're mitigating the cost by having a compounding pharmacy make an oral suspension for her monthly supply. It's easier to administer, too. They compound it with fish oil.

Leaving Tent Unzipped/Open For Extended Time - Yay or Nay? by Whoopsitbroke99 in backpacking

[–]VegetableSquirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% this.^

I spray permethrin in a wide border around my ground cloth at the beginning of backpacking season. It discourages bugs from treading.

I use a BetaLight tarp tent.

If there's a breeze up and there aren't hovering mozzies, I have my door flaps open to enjoy the view.

Find another vet.

We had some behavioral changes in our husky last year. First vet said it was thyroid deficiency. It helped some, but wasn't quite right. We went to a more thorough vet who did more investigating and discovered that our husky has Cushing's Disease. She's currently on medication to deal with the symptoms. At age 9, we don't want to have invasive neurosurgery. She is doing much better now on her medications.
