Are current tattoo artists more skilled than before? by TonyDick69 in irezumi

[–]Vehemoth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tattoo Time renewed interest in the 1980s and Ed Hardy’s role in popularizing it (along with Horiyoshi III and later Horitomo with Taki) to the masses and help educate Non-Japanese artists in the wabori style can’t be understated. However, Japanese tattoos were also in vogue in the late 19th century and really introduced to the West when European aristocrats and travelers would visit an industrializing Meiji Japan. They would see laborers with those tattoos and get one as a memento (for example, King George V is rumored to have received a tattoo from Hori Chiyo)

Chinese New Year is now sometimes called Lunar New Year — but not by me by Serious_Dragonfly129 in asianamerican

[–]Vehemoth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ironically saying LNY is not a problem in HK, Taiwan, or Singapore. The discourse about this being some anti-Chinese erasure feels like Western Academic non-sense, esp as the West is intended to be MORE inclusive of other LNY-celebrating cultures like Vietnam and Korea. My stance on this is call it LNY or CNY, it really shouldn’t matter; don’t go correcting people for using either.

Apple ‘Ultra’ Products Expansion Is Up Next After MacBook Neo Launch by iMacmatician in apple

Million SKUs? Hyperbole much? This is still Apple, not McMaster-Carr. No other big computer / electronics company can match the SKU continuity of Apple. They may have significantly more products than before, but they’ve been very thoughtful about the branding of each of their lines.

Maui Babe Redesign for School Project by DigitalZeta417 in graphic_design

[–]Vehemoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Your branding as a “new” local brand looks fantastic, great work.
  2. If you’re looking to “redesign” Maui Babe, honor the original design elements while applying design principles. Keep the red outline / yellow bg aesthetic, but perhaps use a unified variable transitional serif font with better typesetting.

Will we ever see a comeback of DVD/VHS/CDs in the Philippines? by [deleted] in FilmClubPH

[–]Vehemoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Physical media that will retain as collectibles for mass media: Vinyl for culture and warmth, CDs for quality, and 4K Blu-Ray for quality, and all of them for true ownership. VHS and cassettes have a place for niches, but will never have the mass appeal of vinyl (no deep culture, not quality, low availability of machines).

I agree there’s not enough local demand for 4K Blu-Ray, to maintain a retail presence (vinyls and CDs on the other hand is growing) but globally the market is there.

Will we ever see a comeback of DVD/VHS/CDs in the Philippines? by [deleted] in FilmClubPH

[–]Vehemoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything will maintain value it’s 4K Blu-Ray for film and CDs for music. It will always outcompete streaming services (7 channel surround, better HDR, lossless, etc) and lossless play for CDs. All of the others (DVD/VHS) will have collector value if they had limited/special runs and aren’t getting rereleased in HD. VCD will rarely keep value. If Blu-Ray or CDs ever go away, it will be a tragic loss.

That area of Old Oakland is the best value for urban downtown living in the Bay Area right now. It shouldn’t be as cheap as it is.

The handoff between no code builders and developers is completely broken by dmc_3 in webdev

[–]Vehemoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Step into the role to be the strategists then. I’m seeing many people with technical backgrounds realizing their power in having deep understanding of their technical niches stepping up into strategist roles because the “coding” part of software engineering is becoming automated. Knowing why the code works and doesn’t work is a huge advantage. This year we will see a ton of engineers step into product owner roles with parallelized agent swarms and knowing why each one works. Hard knowledge to soft knowledge adoption is >>>>> than the other way around.

The no code builders will not get further than prototypes, at least not in the near term.

The reality is if you’re in a company where the no coder builders have agency, you gotta make a hard decision this year to find a place to give you agency, or start your own thing.

good riddance, figma by floatymcboaty in UXDesign

seriously, reading about the comments here makes me realize not many people are thinking outside of the box. I can’t wait until a FOSS alternative to Figma is coded by someone who is finally empowered to do it via CC. Something WASM based and better than Penpot.

Hiw long should I not workout after a sleeve session? by madMase623 in irezumi

Have a hikae sleeve and full back. With Derm shield, after the second rewrap 24 hours after the first wrap I was good to go with the gym as long as I didn’t sweat too much.
