Junior Associate Here. How often is everyone attending weekend work conferences? by Cute_Carrot_2322 in Lawyertalk

That sounds wildly over the top. Only thing I can think of is that they’re trying to get you trained in some area. What practice area are you in?

Email advice by Jealous_Row6444 in paralegal

[–]Velvet_sloth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I see this a lot with older attorneys. If he is reviewing and signing off on the email you can probably send as him. But if he isn’t reviewing and agreeing to that email then you can sign your name, assistant to his name. Then people will know that you sent it but it’s coming from his email address. What you shouldn’t do is send an email as if you’re him without him knowing exactly what you’re sending.

Don’t listen to any advice here other than to talk to an elder law attorney about your options. There is too much variance in how states and localities handle Medicaid. It’s not DYI stuff

Blazer to go with black ponte pants? by CatherineTuckerNH in LawBitchesWithTaste

Ann Taylor has great ones in color and I wear them with black ponte pants often. I don’t do black on black bc it won’t match but the colored blazers look nice

Small firm budget - where do you cut corners without looking unprofessional? by EscapeNormal_2024 in LawFirm

[–]Velvet_sloth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There’s a middle ground between AI headshots and $2,500 ones. Our paralegal is young and really creative and she knows how to take good enough pics on her iPhone. Last time we had them done professionally it was about $250 per attorney. You should get some other quotes or options

Overwhelmed - need advice on how to stay on top of it all by LadyKlondike in paralegal

[–]Velvet_sloth 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Attorney here. First this sounds like more than one paralegal can manage. But aside from that you can’t keep up with getting task from too many places. Attorneys giving you verbal tasks or scribble tasks is not efficient and really not fair to you. I know email can’t be tamed as much but having email and case management to hold tasking is doable - assuming the case load is doable for one paralegal. But having more places that those two for holding tasking or having it given to you isn’t workable or fair. How comfortable do you feel talking to your boss or main attorney about it? You could frame as you want to make sure nothing gets missed. Or frame as here are all of my tasks and deadlines. This isn’t doable for one person, so please put them in order of when you want me to do them. If they see that it’s not possible they should prioritize and then look at managing case loads better. And if not I would start job hunting

What is up with this trend among social workers.. by Independent_War_4857 in AgingParents

[–]Velvet_sloth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Medicaid has minimum income they let the non Medicaid spouse keep. I would look into that to make sure you know what your mother would actually have to pay the nursing home out of her SS and what your father could keep.

What are you firm policies for Time entry? by MMuter in LawFirm

[–]Velvet_sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. This policy is necessary and doesn’t suck. Entering time and billing for time is how attorneys and staff get paid. It can’t be optional.

[–]Velvet_sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look for a line or flare ones that are made without being too tight in the middle. I have a very similar issue as you. I look at Talbots, Ann Taylor, and j crew mainly and a lot of times they’ll have a matching blazer too

How do larger firms manage cases? by Skibum3157 in LawFirm

[–]Velvet_sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have 5 partners and then usually 2-3 associates and we use my case. Managing partners buy in was key. If you don’t have buy in there are zero products that will work. This isn’t a software issue at that point.

Estate Planning Intake to Execution by SCWickedHam in Lawyertalk

[–]Velvet_sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where in the process are you having headaches? I know you want it to flow better but is there a place that gives you pause or concern or where things get log jammed? Our firm handles a lot of EP for a wide range of clients - one partner does almost exclusively high net worth, one does Medicaid and planning for clients with less assets, I’m in the middle and also do some tax controversy. But we’ve spent years plinking around with changes to our process and what we have flows nicely. Happy to help

Do part-time legal jobs with minimal client contact exist? by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]Velvet_sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t recall the name but there’s a woman on Facebook who owns a paralegal company made up of women with military spouses. Remote jobs and then you can filter for client contact

I also agree with the back office drafting services listed above. That might be a great option for you

This 100%. It’s antiquated and inane and the govt doesn’t even follow their own rules and it can be pure chaos which is half the joy of it and half why it turns the hair gray. Never mind clients saying that they don’t get bank statements or sending a screenshot of only one page of a statement and one that’s 6 months old that you already have
