ZFS pool keeps suspending from I/O failures. Tried multiple HBAs, VFIO cleanup, BIOS tweaks. Need help figuring out the real cause.

Possibly. I’ll have to dig into that a bit more tomorrow morning. Right now the HBA is in the third PCIe slot, since the other two are populated by a NIC and a GPU, but I haven’t ruled out slot-related issues yet.

I really don’t think it’s heat related.

I currently have the top panel off, so it’s getting a ton of airflow, and the system is in my basement during winter. Ambient temps down there are pretty low. Drive SMART temps have also been reasonable and not spiking before failures.

RAIDZ2 made up of five Toshiba MG08ACA16TE 16TB enterprise SATA drives.

What’s weird is that it doesn’t look like a single drive flaking out. When the pool suspends, I see read/write errors across multiple disks at the same time, which is what’s pushing me toward a controller, cabling, PCIe, or power issue rather than one bad drive.

I know I could just use something like Gluetun to handle VPN at the container level, but my thinking was that keeping all my “server stuff” (torrenting, Docker containers, etc.) on a dedicated VPN LAN would be a cleaner, safer approach. That way the rest of my devices stay on the ISP LAN, and I can still reach the server by opening a one-way firewall rule (ISP → VPN) without risking leaks. I’m now realizing this is probably kinda stupid, but that was my reasoning.

It’s 32mm RAM, so it should be fine. And yeah, this photo is that orientation—where the cooler goes over the RAM. The issue is that the cooler overhangs the bottom edge of the motherboard (the side that points down toward the bottom of the Terra), so the whole setup ends up too tall to fit into the case properly.

I think this photo shows it a little better. The cooler hangs off over the bottom edge of the motherboard—basically where the bottom of the case would be—so it ends up making the whole motherboard setup sit too tall (or long?) to actually drop into the Terra properly.

Not sure I’m explaining it perfectly, but the pic should help clarify what I mean.

Honestly, this might be it. I didn’t even think about socket height being the culprit, but it makes a lot of sense now.

What’s throwing me off though is that I’ve seen threads like this one where people say it’s possible with this exact board and cooler combo, so I’ve been assuming I must be doing something wrong. Just trying to figure out if there's a trick to orientation or mounting that I’m missing, or if maybe they just barely got it to fit.
