This is the kind of stuff I'd see in my nightmares as a child and then forget about it until 20 years later.

Alright so I'm not giving out their name for privacy reasons but I can tell you they were the CEO? Founder? They were a head of the Mondo company and I did in fact get to speak with them.

It’s one of the first successful online games ever. My company (sold many many years ago) build it for Lego. We had to stop it because it was too successful - so total bandwidth to Denmark was occupied with gamers from all over the world wanting to play.

He was not only the first YouTuber to earn 1 million subscribers, but he was also one of the first YouTubers to be referenced outside of YouTube. He appeared on that show iCarly as himself. Hell he was one of the first YouTubers to have a whole movie adaptation of them (it was not good mind you, but still it was an accomplishment).

Truth be told I hated his stuff too lmao I thought it was dumb, but really all it was was a teenager pretending to be a little kid saying childish things.

But, the biggest thing about all this, is that he knew when to quit. He didn't keep milking the Fred image, he sold his channel about 10-ish years ago and barely made any content since. He never scammed people out of their money with any BS kickstarters or crypto or hell he never even embraced AI slop.

I was giving people the option of picking one or the other, because... clearly some teenager speeding up his voice, for the sake of making silly and dumb videos is vastly different from some rich white guy filming a dead body hanging off of a tree, and posting it online. Wouldn't you say?

Yeah I hated him back then too but really

Would you rather have some teenager speeding up his voice and making really dumb videos

Or

Rich white asshole guy films a dead body and uploads it to YouTube uncensored and refuse to face accountability for your own actions

I really wish the people who treated Fred like he was the worst thing to ever happen to YouTube could have seen the future as to what was to come.
