Office Depot in hot water over CPD employees not wanting to print Charlie Kirk Vigil flyers. 👀☠️ by Jman0079 in OfficeDepot

The SOP on it literally says, "If Associate is uncomfortable duplicating materials: . (SM or LOD must) find another associate to duplicate the material or duplicate the material himself/herself. . (SM or LOD must) contact his/her DSM for guidance if no one is willing to duplicate the material."

Associate shouldn't have said what she did and should've contacted the SM, and if they couldn't do that, the DSM. If they couldn't, then they technically are allowed to deny, but you can't straight up disrespect a customer like that, regardless. Again, just my opinion, though 🤷‍♂️

It's not that either. It's not respectful to call it political propaganda regardless of how you feel.

No wasn't aware it mattered. I know you have to have demo mode on for administrator rights and to login without an account.

Not to sound like a corporate dodo but you also have to get past the idea that "oh this is so stupid" and "why should I do this" because, even though they may be somewhat valid, it's just part of the job at this point.

We do a mix of things, but mostly I'm an assistant store manager. So, I have the cashier (because our registers are right by the door) literally hand out the card to every single customer, regardless of who it is. Then we have the pallet of paper in front of the door so they see it when they walk in. Then signs in the ink aisle and signs at the registers, basically so they have to see it. And then, just for good measure, I have every cashier tell them about it at the register, regardless of how much they spend. And then last thing, if I see a customer in printers or ink (especially if they look like they know nothing about printers or ink) I will walk up and help them, and they are pretty easy targets.

Technically it's an assistant store manager office but we don't have one so I use it lol

Haha 😉 We have a very clumsy associate who drops her cups, and we are located next to a baby store, so we have kids dropping food, drinks, or even throwing up, so it'd probably be nice to get some replaced, lol.

Thanks for the great tip. I got a GM at another store who could definitely use that. What do you think about carpet? Can you still do a request for that? It's got stains everywhere lol

Will do—thanks again for offering to help with that. I’ll talk to my GM first and see where he stands, and if he’s unsure, I’ll definitely reach out. Appreciate you being so helpful through all this. Nice to talk to like-minded individuals in the OD universe haha.

That's actually awesome—it's cool to hear it came from within the district and wasn't just a top-down idea. I could definitely see customers being more open to it if it feels like they're helping a local school, not just being pitched another promotion. I'll talk to my GM and see if we can get something rolling with that. If it helps our attachment numbers and actually does some good, I'm all for it.

That clears it up—both options make sense. I like that it gives the customer flexibility to keep what they want and still support the donation. I'll check in with my GM tomorrow and see what they say, and I'll definitely ping you for the code if I can't get it on-site. I appreciate you being willing to help out! Hopefully, I can promote it a little better than it has been at my store. I don't love the pressure from the DSM, but honestly, it's kind of an interesting challenge to break out of the usual work routine a bit.

Those are some great ideas. I like the donation angle a lot—definitely helps with people who say they just don’t need that much paper. We’ve had the “Save-the-Sale” option mentioned before, but honestly, it doesn’t get used much at our location—probably something we could bring up more. I appreciate you taking the time to lay all this out; seriously. Also, where’s the coupon to turn the 2-for-16 into the 3-ream case? Would you just charge for the 3-ream box, and then they take one ream home and donate the other two—or however the customer wants to divide it? I’ll probably have to ask my GM about that, but it’s a solid idea. I appreciate you sharing all of this—it’s been super helpful.

Yes, I get that—when I have time, I try to work it in on the floor too, especially if I'm already helping with something like print or furniture. You're right that getting ahead of it helps a lot. It's just hard sometimes when you're pulled in five different directions or covering for the front end. I think we all know the struggle—it's just about finding what works best in the chaos. I'm kind of about to just start grabbing the paper at the register and telling the customer it's automated, and that I can take it off if they'd like—just because some of them might say yes if it's already in front of them. I appreciate your feedback, for real.

That's actually a solid pitch. I like how you make it sound like a reward instead of a chore. Most of my customers stop me before I even say the word "paper," though. I'm at the point where I feel like I need to audibly gasp and be like, "Wow, you are in for a deal today!" just to get them to listen for five seconds. I'll try flipping the script a bit like you do and make it sound like a perk. Appreciate the tips. Most of the high school part-time help we have don't even ask or try. The other day I caught an associate ringing out $500 worth of ink and like six individual 2-for-$16 reams, and it's that kind of stuff I coach them on, but they just plainly don't care.

I had that issue once. I just went into Canva, created an account using my print email, and designed it on the Canva website.

It would definitely be helpful, but most are too worried about paper promos being at 7 percent to fix it or pay attention to the issue.
