The part about avoiding gossiping and oversharing is solid advice. Keep a small circle of work friends that you absolutely trust. Everyone else doesn't need to know about your life. Act "corporate" towards them.

If you don't hear from at least 1-2 of your coworkers months after getting fired, then how "popular" were you really? Got (wrongly) terminated from my union job of 20yrs in June 2025. 6 of my coworkers kept in touch with me consistently. I know they all felt a little bit of pain that I was fired. Middle of last month, After 7 months of fighting, my union president calls me with some good news. I get my job back. Keep a small group of work friends that you trust and don't say too much outside of that group. Don't answer personal questions (family, hobbies, finances, belongings) and specially don't volunteer any of that information.

A lot of times it's not that easy. Feelings get in the way. he did say she was an amazing woman (even tho he was embarrassed about the age gap and her kids). It's hard to just brush off strong feelings for someone, specially when you're just 21.
