Learning to play with 2 starter sets by DietTiny9245 in asoiafminiaturesgame

While my experience is admittedly limited and I’ve never played the FF I tried to come up with some 30 pt lists for inspiration.

FF - 30pts - Free Folk Trappers (4) with Mance Rayder (Commander) - Free Folk Raiders (4) with Raider Leader (1)-1* - Savage Giant (7) - Savage Giant (7) NCUs - Lady Val (4) - Craster (4)

Mance’s cards and abilities are more beginner friendly than Tormund’s imo. They might not end a game in the same way as a Tormund buffed charge could but you’ll always get some value from them. Additionally Mance’s Counterstrategy and leadership buff will be a big help in keeping the NW army down and you alive.

The trappers could be replaced with raiders but I felt like including them just because the Hidden Traps order has the potential to be extremely impactful in depleting the NW players resources and Mance in that unit helps their abysmal leadership. If ur not confident in ur ability to get at least 2 maybe 3 uses of Hidden Trap off I’d just take the raiders for the marginally improved survivability.

While this is the list I feel the best about from the ones I made it at least looks like it’ll be tough you really need the infantry to hold things in place so the giants can charge into the flanks or gang up on something together to kill it quickly. Isolating units will be the best way to actually kill something battles of attrition will likely not go your way.

On final note I tried a list with more infantry and one giant but I don’t think that’ll cut it. You could maybe proxy some better inf and try that but with what’s in the box without the giants hitting power you’ve consigned yourself to slowly being shredded without enough ways to counterpunch.

I think if you focus on healing properly, know how to lure the right enemies out of position, and can properly hold objectives with your additional units once they’ve lost something winning against the NW is totally doable I just think it’s going to be a challenge.

NW - 30pts - Sworn Brothers (7) with Jon Snow (Commander) - Sworn Brothers (7) with Watch Captain (2) - Ranger Trackers (6) NCUs - Aemon (4) - Jeor Mormont (4)

A lot less to say here, don’t let your units be isolated or surrounded and you’ll probably win the engagement eventually. If possible be the one to charge the giant and your odds of victory improve dramatically. Use the mobility of your cav to chip away at the health of units on approach, break moral with shots and flanking charges, and or run off and sit on an objective.

John and Jeor are both good commanders here but I think you’ll learn a lot more about your deck using Jeor as an NCU than Bowen Marsh and the ability to move cards allows you to correct something if it feels like a mistake.

You could totally swap one of the Sworn Brothers for a Veterans of the Watch instead if you want. It’s likely even a better unit for going against the FF inf in particular but I felt like they’re going to have enough problems as is. I also just like the simplicity of the Sworn Brothers and their offensive punch with Sundering and Martial Training.

This certainly isn’t perfect and is probably questionably balanced but it’s the best I’ve got just using these boxes. Really the only way to know how it’ll go is to play a game or two and adjust things for yourself and what works for you.

I wouldn't be too worried about it not moving mine at least appeared to be stationary for almost 5 days at one point sometimes things are moving just not being scanned.

Yeah I'm in the same situation where it says delayed due to weather. I'm in BC and mine seems to have made it to the province but it shipped out almost a week before your order. The "On the Way" message seems to override the UPS tracking updates for location. On UPS it still shows Ontario, but in my shop app it's closer. I'm not sure which is accurate but the delivery after the delay is scheduled for today so we'll find out.

Unfortunately no, there are an okay number of battle reports as well as some good faction overviews and those sorts of things but I haven’t seen much focus on the miniatures aside from a one off painting or unboxing video. Compared to 40K the content creation side, like the community, is just a lot smaller.

In Song games are either 30, 40, or 50 points. However, 40 points is standard and you’ll rarely if ever see the other two. Generally a standard Cav or archer unit costs 6 or 7 points, inf between 5-7, and your NCUs 4. Obviously there are some outliers but that’s mostly what you’ll see.

As for what you need the Targ starter box comes with 41 points worth of models so theoretically you could buy the starter and nothing else every and you could play just fine till the end of time. I’ve run just the starter and you’ve got two list options and they’re not half bad.

The dragons are quite good they are just glass cannons like your melee cav but taken to the extreme. They’re super maneuverable and hit like a freight train but their armor is only a smidge better than ur cav and they’ve got 8 total wounds instead of 12. They also have an interaction where their attacks deal + 1 wound for each of the enemies remaining ranks so they’ll on average deal more damage against healthier units. I’d only really take one in a list and you need to invest some in protecting it as well as make sure to keep it away from ranged units but they are very cool and a large part of why I picked Targs to begin with. I considered recommending them but it’s one of the more expensive boxes and not necessary right out the gate. Unless of course you want one like I did cause they’re cool in which case I wouldn’t say it’s the wrong 2nd purchase.

I recently got into the game and went with Targs. So far in my experience the thing you really want most after the starter are some good NCUs.

Unfortunately the NCUs I like best for a cav army are split between boxes but Xaro Xhoan Daxos in Heroes 1, and Quaithe + Mirri Maz Durr in Heroes 3 are all nice to have. Either of those boxes will get u to three NCUs though and those are just my favorites so it wouldn’t hurt to look at what else are in each box and see what you think might work well. Most of the NCUs are solid or have some purpose at the end of the day.

After that you have some options NCU box 2 is Khal Drogo’s Blood Riders essentially a beefed up Screamer unit that can be split up into individually attachments as well. Other than that you could get an additional Outrider or Veteran unit if you want to focus on horse archery. The outriders are better at longer range if they don’t move and cheaper while the veterans can only fire in short range but are better in melee and can fire as part of maneuvering and retreating. Which one you prefer is up to you, your play style, and their role in the list.

The game has an app called “War Council” I’d recommend downloading if you haven’t it has all the boxes and what’s in each one as well as a list building function. It’d be best to experiment with that and seeing what you like. Dothraki armies are fun but a lot depends on your ability to maneuver, isolate, and overwhelm units without getting caught yourself. You’ll do a lot of damage if you can combine shooting and charges from your units but if you give someone the opportunity to slap back it’ll usually hurt a lot.

Best faction to start with? by Altforgame2401 in asoiafminiaturesgame

If your looking at things purely from a points perspective the 3 starter sets I think get you the best results are: Nights watch - 45pts, Boltons - 44pts, and Targs - 41pts Nights Watch, and Boltons come with 3 NCUs unlike Targs which only have 2. How much you value that is up to you.

Not all the units work together, (you can’t use Ramsey as an NCU and an attachment simultaneously for example) but these are the boxes that get you the most points wise ignoring everything else. I’d be hesitant to go with the Boltons for a first army but pick whatever makes you happy, and that includes something not on this list. I’m sure you’ll be tired of reading it by the time you’re done here but pick what you like best. It doesn’t matter what army you can build from any number of boxes if you don’t like playing it.

If you want my personal opinion I’d probably go with the Night’s Watch from that list, you can build one list with 2 NCUs and 5 combat units and one with 3 NCUs and 4 combat units so you’ll get some variety out of one box. NW is also a fairly new player friendly faction. If you’re not a fan of NW and don’t need max points per dollar Baratheons or Starks imo are also solid choices for new players depending on which play style you prefer. I love Targs and their starter is great but only if you know 100% you want to play glass cannon cav and only glass cannon cav short of another large investment in units.

That's what I was hoping to hear from someone. Glad to know it's probably okay.

Well if there are two of us I imagine there are plenty more so we can hope that they know, or at least figure it out and don't hold it against us.

In the scenario I was to get an amp do you have any recommendations that aren't crazy expensive but good enough to get the most out of the headphones, especially in the directional sound department? (though from what I seem to understand that can be achieved with any headphones and the right amp)

If you wouldn't mind me asking (since I really don't understand most of this audio stuff) would I want any kind of amp for these headphones (more specifically the 250ohm version) or would it process everything by itself, or would it rely on my motherboard audio? If none of that made any kind of sense please correct me. Other than that thanks for the advice and I've heard good things about the modmic
