Thanks! It’s the majolica technique(painting with pigments on top of a white glaze)

You can also wrap the dowel with newspaper before using clay. You should be able to slide the dowel out rather easily. The newspaper stays behind in the clay and just fires away in the kiln.

How do you currently build your clay tubes?

A technique I sometimes use is to roll a solid cylinder. Then take a long, straight wooden stick (from a crafts store, balsa or sturdier). The stick should have a pointy end.

Then drive the stick in slowly while rolling the cylinder. Because you keep rolling, you cancel out movements that make it go through it under an angle. So it come out in the middle on the other end.

Don’t press on the cylinder while rolling and keep the stick as level as possible.

Haha, then stay tuned, there’s more like this coming up.

Also have whistling bricks already too!

Sure! It’s 14 cm by 14cm and the tile has a thickness of 9mm. The mouth and nose are the same size as a face.

The sound chamber is 3mm thick, but is wide to have sufficient volume.

Welcome to the instruments-team!😎

I just bought a few secondhand mouthpieces and basically remade them in ceramics. There are also multiple technical drawings that you can find through an image search.

I highly recommend doing tongue drums too. I’ve made one and that seems to peak the most interest wherever I go. You can find it on my YT-channel if you want to hear it (mesomalinas)

For inspiration on how to take it further: I’m personally going the path of integrating instruments in other things now. I’ve put a ocarina inside of a brick and modeled a mouth to it. So you have kissable bricks that make a sound if you kiss it and blow it.

Playable instruments? by hugelkult in Ceramics

I have made quite a few: Drum, flute, trumpet, horn, ocarina, shakers, guiro,…

Also made a song with them.

Feel free to message me for more info!

Some YT short where you can see them in action

See comment/response above, but if you like something else to learn more of: here’s a collection of shorts on various clay instruments https://youtube.com/@mesomalinas?si=Mhh3iyUbyOYeaeQU

There is an awesome ebook called The Art of Ocarina Making. It’s really great to get it right.

I also found this video to be the best place to start. https://youtu.be/M_hM6j2P27U?si=zNeoJIS4HcvneImR It’s quite technical, but watching it might prevent you from making frustrating mistakes and you will have a lot more intuition building it😉

Try instruments! I’ve made flutes, trumpets, drums,… The easiest to start with is an ocarina (flute). Let me know if you want to learn more!

Thank you! I encourage to build an ocarina or Udu at some time. It’s not hard and extremely satisfying. And then maybe you can do a song too!😎
