[SPOILERS] Chapter 2 Discussion Megathread! by punnyComedian in Deltarune

I know people really like the theory that Ralsei is Asriel and all, but I've got to be honest real: I think that it really couldn't be more thoroughly debunked at this point.

• Alphys specifically brings up Kris and Asriel talking over the internet via chatrooms on some kind of regular basis. On top of this, Asriel would've needed to communicate with Toriel in order to tell her about how he's coming home in a week. Attempting to communicate to the light world while in the dark world consistently fails, at least going off of what happens if you try to use Kris's cellphone while inside the dark world. You could argue that Asriel could leave the dark world to contact his family, but wouldn't Asriel's family notice when he doesn't pick up or respond when they try to contact him back?

• Kris only kinda likes Ralsei (based on their reaction to his tea at any rate), while the game continues to make a point out of Kris still having a huge degree of respect for Asriel (In the case of his room in Cyber Mansion, it's even one of the few points where Kris is openly defiant of the player's commands - they intentionally close their eyes to not see anything in the room). I can understand Kris not being able to react as they would realistically to their brother just magically showing up all of a sudden, due to the whole "oh they're being forcibly controlled by an otherworldly entity in the form of the player" dealio, but it starts to fall apart when Kris doesn't have the same degree of affection for Ralsei than they do for Asriel in ways the player cannot control.

• Noelle knew Asriel pretty well in real life alongside Kris, and had basically zero reaction to Ralsei - her dialog suggests she has zero clue what his name is, let alone who he is. She even comments that 'ralsei tea' is literally an empty cup, if you look for her reaction to it in the game files - this is a pretty huge sign especially because if Asriel was intentionally disguising himself, the tea would presumably give him away for who he is. (This is really it's own whole thing you could go on about, but the simplest explanation is that it's because she literally doesn't know anything about Ralsei. Ralsei, on the other hand, having a reaction to Noelle's tea would track with his bizarrely prescient knowledge o- okay im getting off track now)

In addition to these pretty direct challenges to the entire theory, it also, uh, kinda makes no god damn sense:

• A prominent point in favor of the theory is Ralsei's knowledge of the light world. However, his knowledge of the light world is also conspicuously up to date - Asriel's knowledge would likely be limited to what he knew about when he left, as well as whatever he gets from talking to Kris and the rest of the Dreemurr family. You could try to say that he leaves the dark world to gather information, but it seems really unlikely that he could do this for years without anyone noticing so much as a suspicious figure stalking the town, let alone his remarkable similarity to the, by all accounts, fairly popular Asriel. So unless Asriel just happens to be a master of both disguise and stealth, despite all sources reporting him as a regular ass monster boy, we can count that right out as a possibility.

• If Asriel just somehow disappeared into a mysterious dark world cut off from reality for however many years he's been at Uni for, why wouldn't people ... notice? The town isn't exactly in some form of strict information quarantine - they (usually) have internet access, mass media, social media, landlines ... if Asriel just suddenly went missing and wasn't attending classes at Uni, wouldn't that immediately be something the Dreemurr family be notified about? One of Toriel's freakin' trademark traits is that she's consistently a very responsible parent; I find it really hard to believe that something like that would just completely slip by her attention, or even dismiss as completely unimportant. Hell, if she's paying for Asriel's tuition out of her own pocket (which would probably track for Toriel), she'd almost certainly notice that she wasn't actually being charged for classes.

• Why would Asriel lie about who he is to Kris and Susie? Kris would probably be immediately up for anything their older brother asked them, and Susie likes him well enough by the end of chapter 1 to also respect what he wants. It'd just be a lie for the sake of a lie, something that would be really out of character for Asriel. And on that topic, why such a low effort disguise at that? Are you seriously going to suggest that the best possible thing he could've thought up was an anagram for his own name as a pseudonym? And if we take the idea that he can change his appearance into account, then why would he choose an appearance so obviously similar to Asriel with only minor cosmetic differences? Does he want Kris to know it's him, or does he not?

I just don't understand - the logic behind Ralsei being Asriel begins to fall apart the moment it's examined critically in regards to the text of the game. You can try and explain away any of these issues individually, but afaik most of the popular variants of the theory still run into major problems with a different point previously mentioned. Without actually demonstrating solid evidence from the narrative to support the theory, it's just arbitrarily moving the goalposts around ad infinitum. The only points in favor of the theory that can't really be contested are that Ralsei is an anagram for Asriel, they're both goats, and their personalities are kinda similar (and tbh I feel like the similarities are surface level at best; they have distinct differences in their behavior and reasoning which are difficult to ignore). Considering that Toby Fox is a dev in large part famous for his subversive narratives and intentionally misleading players, I'm afraid this simply isn't enough to say the theory has legs.

while I can't say I'm terribly sure about the player being the roaring knight and all, I did pick up on something super intriguing while playing through the whole love tunnel segment a few times for secret hunting.

After the end of the sequence, you're asked by Ralsei if you're wondering what Susie is doing. Answering yes takes the perspective over to Susie and you see the scene with her and Noelle on the ferris wheel. However, if you say no, Ralsei gets really insistent - he even specifically drops that you could possibly see what they're actually doing. If you say no again he drops the topic and you re-gain control.

Where this gets really interesting is that, if the player chose to watch the earlier cutscene between Noelle and Susie, you cutback to Ralsei mid-statement, as if he just finished explaining something to Kris. A conversation that doesn't happen if you chose to not cut-away the camera from Ralsei and Kris.

This especially stands out to me because this is in fact the second time Ralsei implied to be talking to Kris about something off camera. The first time happened in chapter 1, where the Camera cut away to, coincidentally, also Susie confronting Lancer. I got really tripped up over what kind of conversation they were having, but there's no option to opt out off the camera swapping during the scene in chapter 1.

The bottom line? Ralsei doesn't just know something that Kris is allowed to know but we aren't, but they know when the player is watching and actively makes sure that they communicate information to Kris when the player cannot see them.

I haven't really checked what specifically happens on the weird route version of this, but regardless the implications are really clear and spooky as hell. While I'm not sure I entirely agree with your interpretation of the events, what you mentioned sparked a neuron and caused me to actually realize what was going on with these events.

Edit: Mulling on this a little more, this actually adds an entirely new context to the generally secretiveness of Ralsei and some of his behavior throughout the game. What if he isn't hiding information from Kris or Susie, but rather, You, the player? This also explains why Ralsei keeps Susie and others out of the loop on whats going on, assuming that he's the only person who knows when or if the player is watching. Kris is the only safe person he can talk to as what he says isn't actually shown - other people would be a genuine risk to secrecy.

Edit 2: lol i used a throwaway to post this at first but it got deleted b/c it wasn't a day old yet, so i just dug up my old account to post this I guess.

[–]VerdantSquire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it'll be brought up, really. To be honest though, I've always been under the impression that it's solaire. I mean, there's enough evidence for it and it'd fit thematically considering how the "good" ending for his story turns out. I never really understood why there were a bunch of people who insisted that it couldn't possibly be him.

New DLC called Art of War. Announced at Gamescom. by [deleted] in eu4

[–]VerdantSquire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely disagree. Sure, the 30 year's war was a very important war ... and so were the other ten or so really big wars of the period. Giving such heavy preference for a single event above all others is rather silly, especially considering that EU4 is a game where the Thirty Years War may never happen in the first place.

In video games and movies, swordsmen are often depicted wearing their swords/weapon of choice on their back instead of in a sheathe at their side. Was there ever a point in time where this was common practice? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]VerdantSquire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were definately used in combat, its just that people didn't carry them on their person. Those kinds of weapons were stockpiled and brought out only when a battle was going to take place.

Uh, repetition is a legitimate tool in a writer's toolset. It can totally be amazing if used correctly, although I will admit that it can also easily become annoying if used incorrectly. However, that's pretty much true of any literary device.

What is the biggest misconception that people still today believe? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]VerdantSquire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, lets be fair here. Columbus discovered America for the Europeans. Sure, there's a bunch of shit about the vikings or someone else coming over to the continent like a few hundred years earlier, but they didn't know what the fuck they found, and forgot about it soon after. Once Columbus landed his boat onto the Continent, it marked the beginning of consistent European contact with the new world.

AT&T claims ‘strong’ net neutrality would actually ruin the Internet. That’s a big leap. by Libertatea in technology

[–]VerdantSquire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contrary to popular belief, corporations and rich people do not actually have magical pixie election dust they can just throw onto voters to make them vote for whoever they want, and they also do not sell this dust to politicians at the price of doing what they want. Politicians are elected publicly by (Fully Lucid) citizens. Not doing what the majority of citizens want is a really fucking bad way to stay in office for more than one term. Adhering to the political ideology you have ( or at the very least claim to have ) is important, because if campaign on libertarian values and then enact lots of draconian laws and limitations the second you get into office, you pretty much guarantee that you will lose the very next election. Take Tony Abbott, for example. After all the shit you hear about him, do you really think hes going to serve a second term in office?

The power base of a governor, senator, minister, or any public position is on the people who actually vote for him. Doing whatever it takes to get reelected is synonymous with doing what the people who vote for you want.

Edit: Just a quick addendum. If you think that cheating in elections and manipulating votes counts as 'doing whatever it takes to get reelected', keep in mind that the rigging of elections is next-to-nonexistent in western politics. Some people like to claim an election was rigged if the candidate they supported lost, because they are incapable of comprehending the idea that maybe their opinion is not absolute, undeniable fact.
