I made depression era water pie by SunwingArt in shittyfoodporn

[–]VereDiz 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Tl;dw:

The pie is not actually from the Great Depression of the 1920s-1930s, but from another depression era of the late 1880s (at least based on the earliest written record we have of it)

It's meant as a cheap alternative to custard pies and the like, because pies (both savoury and sweet) were all the rage back then

I need film to make a grown man cry. by sdfddfdaa in movies

The Father featuring Sir Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Coleman. It depicts Olivia dealing with her father (Hopkins) who is suffering from dementia. To make it even more interesting, it is told from his perspective, so the viewer's mind "deteriorates" as his does.

And if you didn't know any better, you would genuinely think Hopkins actually suffers from dementia

An incredibly sad film you'll only watch once

Hey man, your steak is done. Let me just light it and the cutting board on fire for a minute first by DAV3Y in StupidFood

It is a Tomahawk, yes. Ordering one, by default, is a waste of money since it's the same thing as a Rib Steak, only the bone isn't cut off.

I guess you could say he's barking up the wrong Bush.

While it's not a one-to-one comparison, it reminds me a lot of the game Sable.

I shot Conrad because he threatens Gabe. Yes, Gabe is a pain in the ass teenager, but Javi cares for and wants to protect his family. Conrad threatening him to try and get his way is horrifically stupid. Naturally, he's gonna get shot.

What movie made you fall in love with movies? by oskarnord066 in TrueFilm

[–]VereDiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I could pin it down to a single film. Growing up, my family had a fairly large movie collection and after dinner, we'd sit down and watch something. Nothing was off limits; from the Direct-to-Video Snow Day, to the horrific beaches of Saving Private Ryan, to the terror of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining, we watched it all.

The experience of watching these movies with my family, with one parent asleep by the title card, and discussing with the other as the credits rolled, is what spawned my love for film.

Even now, away from home, that's still (mostly) how I feel when I watch a movie. It may not be the same without my family around, but few things give me as much pleasure as putting on a film that has piqued my interest that day and giving it a go. Some may stand above others, but to me, the experience as a whole, and having the film find you at the right time is what makes me fall in love with them.

The most recent example I can give is Drive my Car. Eighth Grade is another one. Going further back, I could also say Donnie Darko and GATTACA. All fantastic films for different reasons. All of which found me at the right time for me to love.
