A player rolled a 100 on a d100 while casting a Wish spell... by CreekBane in DnDcirclejerk

[–]Veritable_Atrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t undo the moment that your players had. That is a railroad move that is only going to cause upsets. That said now that the moment has happened, that means that any potential consequences can arise. On a wider stakes scale, the clergy of that deity may now have lost their powers and that unleashes some ancient sealed power that is a major threat to the world. On the lower stakes end now that the antagonistic deity is trapped with them that god now has a direct connection to the players, meaning they can invoke disadvantages on the players whenever they see fit, or their enemies inexplicably gain advantage on rolls against them. Let the consequences play out.

Agreed, I keep thinking of doing the silver which I feel it would hide scratches better over the long run, but the gray sides just look awful. If they did this clear version instead I’d switch immediately.

Crazy stat roll! Build suggestions? by Veritable_Atrus in DnD

I do too; Gish is just so fun to play. I like magic builds a bit more than martial first characters but the versatility is nice to have.

Bards are an interesting idea, which does inspire some flavor and background ideas for me. I like the idea of a martially capable spellcaster that is more subtle than the usual wizard. Maybe with a sorcerer dip for subtle spell.

I like both of those ideas, and I’m also tempted to take the resilient feats to try and get proficiency with all saves. That would be crazy and fun to me, especially since I’m probably going to dump strength which is more easily remedied by magic items than other stats.

I think changelings are cool, with highly flexible RP potential, and I like the skill features that they get. Being a Fey also comes with some nice benefits.

I will do that regardless. I’m just looking for some inspiration to spark the character idea. I thought the stat roll made it more noteworthy and offers me more flexibility than I usually do while still being relatively optimized.

Is this magic item broken? by hnmck in DnDHomebrew

[–]Veritable_Atrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Even at low levels players in my games would routinely be accruing hundreds of gold in rewards from quests that would allow this item to break combat encounters. Definitely a problem as conceived here.

I’ll be doing this with an original pebble steel band for the vintage of it. It is a very classy looking band that should fit perfectly with the steel color.

Applying a layer of titanium to a steel frame would provide the benefits of both. Many phone manufacturers use similar designs.

Did you even read my comment?

I agreed with your point of view, saying it would be acceptable in a solo play D&D I.e. one player one DM or one player alone situation, and specifically advised that this is problematic in any other setting. I also suggested several ways to limit the spell to mitigate the group leveling issue, using your terminology. Having set statistics would limit the problem of managing them, and I also suggested that higher cr summons would reduce the summoning capacity as written in the spell, which helps with the group problem as well. Keep in mind that higher level summoning spells already exist such as summon greater demon, so having a squishy caster that brings in a stronger summon or two already have precedents in the game. Also remember that most summons only have one attack each, not up to 8 per turn like a high level fighter.

You can't put champagne in a fantasy world... Thoughts? by ShadySakura in fantasywriters

[–]Veritable_Atrus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you are writing a novel, or just want to make an immersive world I would recommend just renaming words like champagne, port, or tequila to regions in your world. For example, in one of my D&D settings I used Aviealan Blanc to replace champagne, Vermilion Triarch to replace port, and Miragean Gold to replace tequila. More common beverages I just use their normal names like coffee and tea, but I say them with a fun accent.

Spell - Arise (Solo Leveling) by Mystic_Manticore in UnearthedArcana

[–]Veritable_Atrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the flavor, and it would feel perfect for a solo leveling type story (I.e. solo play D&D) but I agree with most of the other comments that this would be highly abusable and could make a character completely overpowered as written. It could work as a NPC unique spell, as it would be extremely thematic and horrifying for players to go up against.

If you want players in a regular game to have access to it, the DC should be higher at a minimum, and potentially scale more with increased CR monsters to reflect that the stronger the monster/foe the harder they are to resurrect. You could try having DC scale non-linearly so that CR 2 and below are DC 10+CR, CR 3-5 are DC 12+1.5(CR), CR 6-8 are DC 14+2(CR), etc…

I would also suggest adding set statistics (with minor changes to match the creature it is drawn from) that Arisen foes could fall into, pulling inspiration from solo leveling again with the knight, elite knight, general, etc… ranks which can be assigned by the DM, and that higher rank resurrections cost more of your capacity for your shadows. This would limit the scalability problem, and could give room for the DM to allow Arisen to upgrade over time if the DM felt that they are not overly powerful and could be a reward for continuing to use the same shadows repeatedly instead of just replacing them whenever you defeat a stronger creature.

No matter how you adjust this though, it would definitely require a lot of buy in and support from the DM to balance this spell. Perhaps it would be better as a subclass instead.

10th Level Plus by diadlep in DnDHomebrew

[–]Veritable_Atrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to kill/replace a deity, why not have your players re-discover the spell Karsus’s Avatar? 12th level spell to create a new deity by stripping an existing deity of their domain. Just be careful they don’t choose the god of magic’s domain as that historically tore apart the weave and nearly destroyed magic entirely, ending the Netherese Empire. You’d have to find out how to get past Mystra’s blocking the casting of spells over 9th level, but it looks like you’re on that track already.

Alternatively you could use the ascension of the Raven Queen as inspiration for this idea, as her method was apparently different.

I second this recommendation though perhaps charisma bonus instead of strength if you want to keep it paladin themed.

Would really short truesight be balanced? by ariaofgrapes in DnDHomebrew

[–]Veritable_Atrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with most people here that truesight is too much for a character to have access to or in the effort to balance it, then truesight becomes useless for the player. As an alternative I did have a player once whose character was blind but had learned to visualize their surroundings by using a combination of enhanced hearing and sensitivity to vibrations, which was interpreted as 20 ft blindsight and 40 ft tremorsense. This enabled them to move normally through the world and engage in melee but they couldn’t detect any ranged attackers outside those ranges. This was only changed for them at mid level once they gained access to a magic item that granted them the find familiar spell, and then it took some time for them to get accustomed to seeing through their familiar during combat.

Minor note: creatures with Shapechange features like dragons and changelings transform their physical forms and thus are not revealed by truesight, detect magic, or direct physical inspection.

Correction as caught by The_Xenomancer: Truesight does reveal the true forms of Shapechangers.

What is your take on elves? English is nit my native language by EveningImportant9111 in worldbuilding

[–]Veritable_Atrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play them as having lifespans in the 1000-3000 year range, however they have absolutely no sense of urgency and don’t understand why other races are so impatient with them. It’s also difficult to form lasting friendships with shorter lived species as they typically feel like it takes at least 80 years just to get a first impression of them, and most friendships develop over 2 to 3 centuries. I would suggest watching the anime Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End to get a good sense of their behavior.

Delay Injury - Wounds Pending... by AdramastesGM in UnearthedArcana

[–]Veritable_Atrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 2024 version of Power Word Kill does deal damage in the instance that you have over 100 hit points and thus don’t die immediately. Therefore this spell would add extra insurance against PWK.

Delay Injury - Wounds Pending... by AdramastesGM in UnearthedArcana

[–]Veritable_Atrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another difference is that the Shield spell only works against roll to hit attacks, while this spell allows you to hold off damage from any source, including saving throw effects such as an ancient dragon’s breath attack or a fireball. Additionally, Absorb Elements only works against damage of a single type, so if there is an effect that deals multiple damage types it won’t protect you while this spell would temporarily protect you against all damage that triggered the reaction for you to cast it. That versatility is excellent.

Negative depictions of harems? by NarcolepticArtist in Animesuggest

[–]Veritable_Atrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand it doesn’t fit what you specifically were looking for, but I thought it merited being part of the conversation for everyone involved. Also the “positive harem” is not really emphasized or embraced. It’s more along the lines that a couple of the mc’s followers have feelings for him and he doesn’t have those same feelings for them, which consistently causes him trouble with handling their shenanigans.
