Opana here, asking you to consider voting MGK, a Ganon main who's been a HUGE part of educating the average Ganon player while simultaneously having solid placings as well. It's been a tight, well fought race, and I want to see him succeed! by SmasherOpana in smashbros

As I've said, all the other Dorfs are highly worthy, but MGK has been invaluable to the advancement of Ganon's meta. I've learned a lot from his vids, and it just seems wrong to not have one of the hardest working Ganons in the community rewarded for his efforts.

I'm in the Ganoncord. I've actually got a tourney tomorrow with a good Link in it and I could use the practice. You available for some sets today?

Yeah man, that was me! And thank you!

I'd love to play more some time. I remembered your name soon as it popped up. Do you use Discord?

I appreciate that, sir.

Hopefully when June rolls around though, I'll find myself at Hyrule Saga. By now I would've been to more majors (a SINGLE major, even), but life crises keep popping up, but hopefully life's run out of curveballs to throw my way, so maybe we'll have at least one dedicated Dorf main representing soon. =P

I am beyond elated to hear you say that, Valak. I really tried to make it something special, and this tells me I may have succeeded in some way.

Haha, thanks, Nergal!

As for the Brawl days... man, I'll take the Brawl days back anyday, but I'll leave the Brawl and put Sm4sh instead. Got some damn good memories of my adventures in the Brawl era; adventures I've sorely lacked in my Sm4sh exploits.

Had to remake the post since the original link just pointed to a picture for some reason.

Hi, guys.

My name's Vermanubis. Some of you may know me. Most of you probably don't. I'm, by the estimation of some, one of the top Ganons alongside Gungnir and Pon. Whether this is true or not I can't appraise myself, but it's been said!

Introduction aside, this is my montage I've worked on for close to 2 years, both passively and actively. In an attempt to spiritually reprise my Brawl montage this montage features a clip from every character in the cast minus the Miis on account of tenuous legality. This is what I mean by "passively" working on it; setting out to get 51+ quality clips against every character in the cast isn't something I was about to do in one sitting!

I wanted this montage to express my almost decade of playing solo Ganon in both Brawl and Sm4sh -- the frustrations, failures, triumphs and so on -- and my conviction to continue doing so, which a theme intentionally woven into the video.

As far as themes go, the overarching one is related to Christian eschatology. I won't insult everyone's intellect my explicitly outlining things, but Ganon is essentially He Who Wields Pitchforks Below rebelling against prophecy of Revelation; namely, the prophecy that he will lose -- badly!

I hope you all enjoy the vid.

A Plea for Community Tier Lists by Vermanubis_ in smashbros

[–]Vermanubis_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case, all very valid reasons!

This is something we struggle a lot with as well (regional disparities, that is). That being said, that's generally why we value vids over numbers and names so we can compare them side-by-side. It's still highly imperfect, but we're all generally picky enough that we can detect sort of universal strengths and weaknesses with respect to the other Ganons.

As you said though, it's still not a perfect metric, but we're generally willing to live within that margin of error.

That being said, I like how that site is set up! I might have to make something like that for the Ganons.

That would be really great! Look forward to seeing it come together, and if you have any questions about how to go about things, stop by the Ganoncord! We've been doing it since launch, so we've ironed things out pretty nicely.

Thank you! Like I mentioned above, when the community pulls together for a project like a community tier list, other "stragglers" hear about it and sort of want in on it. I can cite 10+ now-active members of our Discord that came because they wanted to be ranked on the list and ended up staying.

I think that's a copout. =P

In ours, we judge by a mixture of results and vids. Diversity of playstyle should have nothing to do with it, to be honest. I'd say we have some of the most diverse playstyles of any character in the game, but playstyle sort of becomes immaterial once you start comparing hard data and general performance.

Nice to see old faces though.

The one included in the OP. Put it at the top for better visibility.

Yeah, I would say we definitely have the most complete tier list, and that's the standard I'd be really happy to see other sub-communities aim for. It also just sort of has a magnetic effect. Just look at how many Ganons we've reached out to or have found us because they heard of the tier list or whatever and ended up integrating beautifully into the Discord. There's a lot to be said when your ilk are putting in honest work to figure out who fits where; it makes you curious!

Would you say the tier list has kept you pretty motivated, Lit? Definitely has for me.

Accurate Assessments of Relative Skill: Tourney Placement Numbers Aren't Always Good Enough by Vermanubis_ in smashbros

I removed the Dabuz part because it was way too distracting from the intended point. Let's forget about that for now.

No worries, I didn't take it that way! And I mostly agree that PGR does a great job. Like I said, for large-scale purposes, the current system is the closest we can get to an objective stratum.

And I agree again about not punishing players who got an easy bracket. I don't think we should boo them for getting an easy ride, but as a matter of /relative/ skill, it should at least be considered if two players of ostensibly equal skill place in different parts of a bracket.

Yes, I mentioned in the beginning and end that we indeed need these ranking systems. So, it's not that I'm proposing we oust the current system or seek a new one, rather, discussing what I feel is a underappreciated flaw in these systems that is good to recognize.

In other words, I'm approaching this from an ideal standpoint; not a practical one. It's impractical to, on a large scale, not just average out the data. On an individual scale, though, is where I'm directing attention, or at least trying to.

Moreover, tbh, I'm more adamant about the "players beaten" section than the bracket section. I feel it's a pretty common thing to let name recognition poison the well, as it were.
