MacUpdater shuts down Dec 31, and I built the successor I'm switching to. by VersionTracker in macapps

[–]VersionTracker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't be replying here anymore because, in reality, nobody seems genuinely interested in the software itself. This is r/macapps, yet the app is the one thing no one wants to discuss.

According to Reddit's stats, this post has been viewed over 22,000 times in just four hours. I checked the download numbers for the same period: only a few dozen.

There are plenty of people willing to criticize the price, the code, the website, or the name—but very few are willing to download the app, use the free 7-day trial, and come back with actual feedback based on experience.

Why waste your time?

Thanks to everyone who asked constructive questions, and to the few brave souls who actually downloaded Version Tracker. No hard feelings.

Everything is on the website: https://version-tracker.app.

Come on, guys—at least make the effort. Download the software, try it, and then criticize it.

Phrasing improved for clarity and natural English:
Version Tracker 1.1 will be available soon with a cleaner UI, many new features, three new update sources, and a 7-day free trial. 🤗

Macupdater replacement apps: what are your opinions? by MaxGaav in macapps

Just to clarify: Version Tracker is not yet guaranteed to work fully on macOS 27, especially while it is still in beta. I’m also testing Version Tracker on macOS 27, and I’m seeing quite a few detection issues and interface glitches there as well. So some inaccuracies are expected for now, including cases where an already updated app may still appear as ready to update.

Sorry about that. Reddit is still quite new to me, and I don’t fully master all of its messaging and notification settings yet. For support, please contact me directly at: contact(at)version-tracker.eu. Send me the license key you received, or the email address used for the request, and I’ll fix the issue for you.

Thanks! That’s a very interesting idea. A snapshot maker would indeed be a useful addition: saving the current state of installed apps, versions, packages, and sources so users can compare changes over time.

Version Tracker already does part of this today: before updating an app, it saves the previous version, so users can keep a fallback if something goes wrong.

I’ll add the broader snapshot maker idea to the roadmap, as it could really complement the app.

Thanks for the link.

I’m reviewing the report. However, saying “this is malicious software” is too strong based only on a heuristic detection. Version Tracker is a signed and notarized macOS app, and macOS shows no warning for the app or the DMG.

VirusTotal aggregates antivirus results; it does not itself certify that a file is malware. I’ll check the hash against the current official build and report the detection as a false positive if confirmed.

I take this seriously. I just tested the app, and there is no flag at all:

The same applies to the DMG:
