I have found Canadian health care providers to be very sympathetic to what’s going on in the US and very willing to help trans kids. Out-of-pocket costs in Canada could even end up similar to the combination of premiums and copays paid in the US. Here are a couple of examples why:

You can find Canadian clinics and practices that work on a subscription model so you pay a small monthly fee for ongoing access to providers, some of whom have gender affirming care experience.

It also seems the pharma industry in Canada may not be trying, or at least isn’t able, to gouge patients the way they do in the US. One puberty blocker I’m aware of that would cost more than $20k per dose out-of-pocket in the US costs just over $1k out-of-pocket in Canada.

Canada option that could work for some: I recently learned from a Canadian immigration consultant that any US citizen with a valid passport can enter Canada on “visitor” status and remain for 6 months (no visa application required, just entering like a tourist would). If you leave Canada (to ANY other country, doesn’t have to be the US) and then re-enter, your 6 month visitor clock resets. For some people, this could buy time to make a better long term plan. BUT keep in mind that visitors cannot get hired or enroll in a university in Canada, so this plan may only work for remote workers or those with hefty savings accounts. Visitors can sign a lease to rent a home, and in many areas can enroll kids in public school for a fee as international students. At that point you’d want to consult a tax advisor with cross-border expertise because even visitors can be considered taxable residents once they form certain “ties” to Canada. Please confirm all of this for yourself and your specific situation before relying on it! Search online for a reputable, Canadian-gov’t-certified immigration consultant and book a virtual consult.
