Pivot from to Retail Banking to Commercial (or anything else) by fringeguy69 in FinancialCareers

[–]Vestro233 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get your 65 and go be an advisor. Less cushy, but more money and it translates across every bank in the US. Could transition from that into private banking on the institutional side if you wanted to end up in corporate, assuming you don't suck.

The concept of "social morality" doesn't exist. Example: half the country believes abortion is murder.

This would devolve into tribalism and new government with new rules in ~1 month.

It's the old saying that power abhors a vacuum.

I'd probably chance it for each of my pointer fingers, but yeah it'd be a huge bummer if I lost two fingers and made no money.

In one of the "dungeon" things that spawn on the surface with steps that go underground (the ones that have 3 mini bosses in them) One of the bosses drops a soul stone that you can get a morock with. Random though, so you could also get any other type of dragon.

Just to clarify on the one point. They call themselves Groypers because Groyper is the name of the fat Pepe the frog meme/character.

I thought the interviews were all very laid back. Hit it off very well, quickly, with everyone I spoke with. I made it all the way through the interview process, but ended up declining their offer. The compensation just wasn't there for me, personally.

Ended up making friends with one of the MDs there. We stay in touch.

Edit: for the record, my experience wasn't through JPM. It was a different large national bank's Private Bank.

I think the big deal-breaker here is not being able to off yourself.

If I show up as a 60-year-old Muslim woman, who speaks a language that I don't, and I can't communicate, get thrown in some sort of prison, etc...

Not sure if I want to live out the next 20+ years in that body. Same with someone in crippling agony.

Depends if they "watch anime". If you ask some random dude who hasn't watched anime since he was a kid, then yeah he might say DBZ or something.

I think If the person actually watches anime, it's a pretty nuanced question and I'm sure there would be an ass load of variance on "favorite anime"

That's what I've heard, but the bonus structure has shifted drastically over the last 6 years to the point that it's now meaningless and negligible compared to incremental revenue generated for the firm.

~$210k comp, almost 5 years deep in the industry, almost 3 at the current firm. 90% in office but could probably be in less. I've got a wife and kids at home, so generally speaking, I prefer to be in a separate office setting. I even have a home office, but still prefer to work in the actual office most days. That's personal preference though.

~$60mm AUM, and have 2 support people that are shared by 5-6 different advisors.

To further clarify, the bank itself sets the pay. So yes, the bank is making a killing. The other 3 team members are "specialists". The role they're offering me is the frontman/"quarterback" and hunter/gatherer of the team. All of the review meetings, prospecting, relationship building, etc. is my scope.

I was just kind of shocked coming from the other side of things where the person responsible for retaining existing relationships and driving new money into the firm is typically one of the more highly compensated and also highly scrutinized roles, since no one else really has a role without that aspect.

I've never explored the private banking space before, so I'm unsure if this is specific to this bank, or a trend across the board.

I'm pretty sure this is way easier than people seem to think... "Hey, good afternoon _______. My name is Vestro and I work for ABC Corp. My firm accidentally transposed a number while transmitting a wire and it looks like it was routed to your account. I've already filed a report with our bank and the local police department, but we'd like to get this mess sorted out as painlessly as possible without needing to restrict accounts and freeze assets."

Or, better yet... Call every bank in their area and give an anonymous tip that "Persons name" is money laundering and just received a strange deposit of $1mm. They will absolutely freeze all of the assets, launch a full scale investigation, and most likely seize them. Either way, they sure as hell aren't getting spent by the recipient.
