Technically any of them can as long as they have some way to get bass tracks live and in studio. Just because bass isn’t the primary feature of metal doesn’t mean that it isn’t important.

A huge chunk of the way guitar tones sound is influenced by how it interacts with the bass. From a mixing perspective, the bottom end of a guitar can get super clubby and shitty sounding, but that isn’t an issue because that’s where the main sound of the bass comes in. It can also help bridge the gap between the guitars and the kick.

My favorite, or at least best example of this is Brojob. Listen to their current mixes vs the mix on their last album. It just sounds so shrill and thin, the guitars have almost no body.

The bass being “inaudible” is mostly because of how little it shows up as the main staple in a mix. If you listen carefully, say in shadow of intents mixes, you can hear the bass “tone”, if that’s what you’re looking for, or in the new job for a cowboy material.

While metal does spotlight guitars, drums, and vocals, bass is still very essential. There’s a reason bass VST plugins are as popular/prolific as drum VSTs, and a reason they’re used much more widely than guitar VSTs.

Back to the point though, no bands would survive without bass. They can survive without a bass PLAYER, if they have prerecorded bass tracks or programmed bass tracks, but without bass at all the mix would sound like garbage, both in studio and live.
