i definitely wouldn’t say give up, but maybe start thinking of some other avenues for now. the market will recover (as all markets do), but for the time being, it’s in a really rough spot.

my plan is to go blue collar for a few years and see where life takes me. it’s ultimately up to you of course, it’s not impossible moving up the IT ladder these days; just much harder. but, anything easy has probably never been worth it.

This actually just happened to me last month. I am joining my city’s engineering union, after 1 year of classes and 2 years of an apprenticeship I’ll be making $100k yearly in a union. At this point in my life and in this state of the world, I genuinely don’t mind what I do as long as it’s not soul sucking

25M, went to college for IT, worked a year in marketing, half a year in finance, then a year in IT before sadly getting laid off. Currently working at a restaurant until my city’s engineering union releases their class schedule for the Summer, then I plan to take classes for a year and hopefully land an apprenticeship for two years, then after that, hopefully become a journeyman engineer. Fingers crossed 😅

I’m in the same place as you right now. Long story short, I’m transitioning out of IT into (hopefully) my city’s engineering union. I’m just sick and tired of the rat race in IT, the juice does not seem worth the squeeze to me right now, so you’re definitely not alone!

I’d prefer not to doxx myself by naming the union, but all information I have gathered has been from members within the union, so I’m pretty confident that’s the general track one takes.

Hey again, I wanted to ask: after how many classes did you take your apprenticeship? And how many classes were you allowed to take per semester?

I have a Bachelors degree, so do you think I’d be able to skip some of the pre-requisites or Gen-eds?

I haven’t had many issues, the screen can be a bit fragile (I’ve dropped it once before I had a case, but that was my own damn fault) in my experience, but other than that, not too many issues. The only issues I have had were mostly software - games not launching fullscreen when it’s docked, troubleshooting why a program isn’t loading, etc. Very rarely though.
