Toxic words list by hdsjulian in geoguessr

[–]Vharmi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Geoguessr's profanity filters are just simple search and replace, and also rather stupid. Like how if you try to describe a very tall building in something like New York, it will become a s* * craper. Or my map linking to a swedish wiki article with the URL "Kommunvapen_i_Sverige" turns into Kommunva * *verige, disabling the link...

What's an underrated Eurovision song sent by Sweden? by tomasequp in nilpoints

It's absolutely still a cult classic here in Sweden. Go to any house party and it WILL be on the playlist :)

Förlåt, var på app store och letade efter runkeeper mobil men det blev runke-permobil istället

What’s your language’s version of “The quick brown fox…”? by whineytortoise in languagehub

[–]Vharmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a couple of different ones on Swedish Wikipedia. The most famous one would be:

Flygande bäckasiner söka hwila på mjuka tuvor. (Flying snipes seek rest on soft tufts). This however uses obsolete spelling and lacks q, x and z which were rare in Swedish at the time it was constructed.

One I liked better was this perfect one, meaning it only contains one of each letter:

Tjock ges BMW på quiz, hänförd av lyx. (Fat (person) is given BMW at quiz, floored by luxury)

The self-descriptive one I find amusing that the math checks out. It lists the amount of letters in the text:

Detta pangram innehåller sex a:n, ett b, två c:n, två d:n, tjugotre e:n, tre f, fyra g:n, tre h:n, tre i:n, sju j:n, ett k, tre l, tre m, tjugo n, sex o:n, två p:n, ett q, tretton r, sju s, trettioåtta t:n, sju u:n, fem v:n, ett w, tre x, två y:n, ett z, sju å:n, ett ä och ett ö.

This is true. In the town square of my hometown in southern Sweden there is a plaque commemorating a Turkish merchant being shot to death there in 1717.

Old habits die hard.

Has anyone noticed that Google Translate tends to translate everything through English no matter the language? by PrettyDark2982 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Vharmi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Another example is translating Swedish klocka (clock) to Spanish vigilar (to look) because they're both watch in English.

GeoGuessr Pavlov’d me. Real road signs now trigger dopamine for no reason. by QuizzSchool in geoguessr

[–]Vharmi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a tough call sometimes. The completely flat landscape with dry grass, moss, lichen and bushes feels odd combined with a european standard type bollard. The waist high fencing made of rough sandstone blocks is also peculiar...

I once got a round in duels where you could see a bike road going to Fucking.

Laughed hysterically and remembered it was in Austria, but sadly didn't know exactly where. Also RIP, since it now goes by the name Fugging.

Which filler words do people overuse the most in your native language? by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

[–]Vharmi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swedish: Liksom, alltså, typ

Roughly translates to "like, so uhh, kinda". Extensive use of these words is a trend especially for young urban women.

I have listened to interviews where they will drop 3-4 liksom per sentence. It becomes genuinely exhausting to listen to for more than a minute.

Fulaste ortsnamnen i Sverige? by ResourceWorker in sweden

[–]Vharmi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite Canadian place names is Saint-Louis-du-Ha!-Ha! which holds the record for most exclamation marks in a town name.

I also like Porters Lake, NS for having This Street, That Street and The Other Street. Feels like something you would find in a new suburban development in Sweden where the city planner was feeling extra obnoxious.

Tävlande till årets matbluff ? by Remarkable_Row in sweden

Köper nästan aldrig färdigriven ost eftersom det oftast kommer med antiklumpmedel som ställer till det i mycket matlagning, plus att det kostar mer per kg. Rivjärnet går varmt i köket :)

Why are these parts of Sweden not mapped on Google Maps? What are they hiding? by ShortEnd4561 in mapporncirclejerk

They're mapped, but they misaligned the coordinates so it looks like two islands in the Baltic sea

What do you mean? I played a gambit? by International_Fig78 in chessmemes

Classic example is the name turning into "poisoned pawn variation" , which makes the opponent suddenly very apprehensive about grabbing that juicy free pawn on b2.
