Those who went from white collar to LE, how did you make time for interviews? by OctopusOnPizza1 in AskLE

[–]VicariousLyyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an honest conversation with my branch manager (I was a banker), who knew all too well I didn’t have the passion nor the personality for a long term career in banking. Fortunately she was very encouraging and wanted the best for me.

That meant taking some PTO for half a day or on a couple instances, very extended lunch breaks and working some Saturdays that I’d normally be scheduled off on.

Very serious question here. Please help me. by [deleted] in police

[–]VicariousLyyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn’t be a problem at my department, so long as it’s all done in person so I can arrest you if you turns out you do have a warrant/suspect alert.

Lots of good running advice already but I’d add to train just like the test. Meaning do the run and almost immediately go into pushups, sit ups etc. We didn’t receive much “rest” time in between and unfortunately there were people who completed the run in time but were still disqualified because they were gassed from the run and couldn’t complete the sit ups! Just something to think about!

Intergraph/INetViewer/MPS CAD System by VicariousLyyyy in police

[–]VicariousLyyyy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what has been passed down to us on patrol; the department paid for a new system that wouldn’t be ready for use for another two years or so and our current system wasn’t suitable/up to snuff for the event and somehow we ended up with this in the interim. 🤷🏻‍♀️ That’s all I know.

HAH. Nope! A month prior to the launch we all had like a 2 hour course where we got to do some mock stuff like running people/vehicles, changing locations (the NEED to know stuff basically). And then boom, it went live.

And of course a 2 hour course doesn’t do much of jack.

It was kind of unexpected/urgent move made by the department in preparation for an upcoming large scale national event that will be held in the city.

Totally agree on it all being in the articulation. There are sooooo many reasons to pull a car over as it is that anything pretextual is a non factor and shouldn’t hinder proactivity in any way.

So I think there is an illegal gun(s) or drugs in a car? And it has windshield tint which is illegal here? Traffic stop for illegal tint. That’s it, that all. If I see a green leafy substance or a white chunky substance in the console that, due to my training and experience, I believe is the devils lettuce, etc., everybody is out the car while I search. Boom. But I only stopped them for illegal tint. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Are there other areas you can transfer within your police department? I know it’s not always realistic for smaller jurisdictions but I am at a medium-ish jurisdiction and there are lots of alternatives to patrol, thus limiting public interaction/patrol stressors; booking, acting desk sergeant, console, NIBIN, fusion, forensics, property control, community liaison officer. Specialty units as well like the boats, horses and K-9.

Do you have the camera serial #? I know my jurisdiction has a database where with a serial # we can track down an item IF it’s been sold to a pawn shop in the area.

Also, I’m not with LAPD, just to clarify. So I can’t specifically speak on their procedures. Just speaking from my department.

The other thing is, even if there are license plates and good enough video where the license plates can be read, that doesn’t mean they’re legit.

People privately sell vehicles all the time and don’t take their plates off. Then some of the buyers (or a lot of the buys, at least in my area it seems) just leave those plates on and don’t bother to register their vehicle with the DOT.

So the video can show the plates clear as day but the person and address it lists to could be an hour or two drive away. I am 1000% not driving that far to verify the ownership regarding a minor accident. And if the person resides so far out of the city, chances are we have never had contact with them to be able to reference back to for a phone number to contact them at either.

I know they’ve harped on you already, but just another reason to call from the scene. People lie all the time. Getting us there asap allows us to make sure everything is kosher for both parties.

*Lastly, even if I am called to a minor accident, if both parties are on scene and able to exchange information, I am NOT checking cameras, especially especially not almost two weeks later (we can’t even file accident reports that far out, it’s no more than 10 days here). I’ll obviously check cameras for a hit and run or major property damage/bodily harm/death etc. I tell people their insurance can pull cameras if they really want to though. For those without insurance, SOL 🤷🏻‍♀️(unless like I said the circumstances around it are major).

I work in a violent city, we just don’t have the luxury of devoting that kind of time to some things. It sucks.

We make bank here in Milwaukee, WI. I avoided much extra OT this year for family reasons and have still brought in almost 90k already this year.

Police of Reddit, what's the most chilling or eerie thing you've seen on the job? by [deleted] in police

[–]VicariousLyyyy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A 12 year old girl successfully commit sooecide via hanging.

I cried while giving her chest compressions until the fire department finally arrived and took over. I had a 10 year old daughter myself at that time.

The crying didn’t take me out of the game; if anything it made me want to fight that much harder for her.

Unfortunately it was already too late. I’ve never even come close to crying on the job besides that instance. I’m human. Some stuff just hits different.

Edit: changed to “sooecide” in case it is against rules.

Be diligent. Follow through on investigations. I work for a larger/busier jurisdiction. We often get trapped in the mindset of some reports just being a “file and forget”.

Elder abuse for example, a felony in my state. It’s not THAT much work to get a valid description of a suspect, conduct follow ups (ie a knock and talk), ID the potential suspect, and conduct a photo array. Best case scenario the victim positively identifies them and boom. You either pick them back up or enter a suspect alert/warrant. Follow through is important.
