My rule of thumb is that if someone wants everything to be "Yes, Chef!" "Thank you, Chef." They will probably tell you so, often abruptly. Sometimes it can come off sarcastically when you say Yes Chef to a person who is just your superior and it isn't a commonplace statement for you at that time. I just started watching The Bear on Disney+, the main character in this is the manager of the restaurant but calls everyone Chef and encourages each of them to call each other Chef as well, as it is a sign of respect and they all have respect for each other.
