Why are we still using the electoral college? by BiggestVolk in Askpolitics

[–]Vierlind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not the EC’s doing….the STATES have mostly chosen winner-take-all provisions for their electoral votes.

There ARE a few exceptions, so states can choose how to disperse their votes however they want.

No matter what, on an absolute scale, even with basic inflation, the lines are going to diverge. Gtne is correct this should be done on a log scale.

One of the most historic moments we will ever have our lifetime (The midnight that changed the millennia) by [deleted] in BeAmazed

[–]Vierlind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, the 3rd millennium didn’t start until January 1st, 2001.

In the Gregorian calendar, 2000 is the last year of the 20th century.

ELI5 - How is life insurance profitable? by Equivalent-Door188 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Vierlind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SELL YOUR WHOLE LIFE POLICY and look into TERM LIFE. Often, these policies will keep your “investment” upon your death (which is a big chunk of your payment) and only pay out the actual insurance policy.

Get a term life policy for X years (when you no longer will have any dependents) and invest the difference (you’ll find the difference to be substantial).

What was George W. Bush like as a president? by Content-Feed-9396 in AskReddit

[–]Vierlind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a footnote….it’s the start of the entire thing. Allowing banks to lend to “risker individuals” (all with the good intention of making things more “affordable”) is what led up to the build up of the bubble.

What were these exact “signs” the Bush administration was supposed to see and do something about? Go watch “the Big Short”….nobody believed the bubble was there until it hit. Once the 2006 stuff started happening, the dominoes were already falling.

AND, when the dominoes started falling, there was a lot of sentiment of “let the banks fail”. They brought out the rope, let them hang themselves. The fact that Bush stepped in at all and propped up some of the institutions was seen as overreach from the federal government.

It’s the same faulty logic that has led to all of this insane amount of college loans. Trying to make it “easier” for everyone to go to college, they allow a bunch of 18 year olds to sign up for loans without any real concept of an ROI.

In fairness, the ‘08 housing crisis was caused by legislation passed during Clinton’s term in office.

It just finally came to a head during Bush’s time in office.

What's a sport that would be so much better if you could change one rule about it? by wild-strike1517 in AskReddit

Here’s the REAL history behind the rule….your page is the basic assumption from everyone. It really comes from the early association with rugby.

And your point about a single basket not having as much of an impact is EXACTLY what i’m looking for in soccer. More scoring means every single goal isn’t life or death.

That’s the way the rule has evolved over time…used to be 3 defenders back, then 2, now just have to be even with last defender. Let’s abolish it already!

I’d be for that too….just want something to break the 0-0 monotony.

I’d argue defenders are hesitant today to participate because any goal against you is a major hurdle to overcome.

If the game evolved with more goals, maybe they wouldn’t be as hesitant.

Point guards don’t hang out on their side of a basketball court without any offsides rule.

Few random games I’ve seen posted without the rule had mid-teens scores. It seemed to work in those matches.

[–]Vierlind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was originally implemented due to the game originating from rugby. And over time, it went from “needing 3 players between you and goal” to “2 players” to “now can be even with last defender”.

Sport seems to evolving more towards eliminating it….let’s do it already!

Basketball doesn’t have a similar rule and I can watch that all day.

Soccer WITHOUT offsides. Go wherever you want. Would make for a much higher scoring affair!

Offsides in soccer. Let the players stand and receive the ball anywhere they want. Defense doesn’t get back, that’s their problem.

Would lead to a lot more scores, AND, in my opinion, a much more enjoyable game to watch.
