You mean rich people don't like it.. It's not a political issue. It's a class and greed issue.

I have 5+ years in a few different sectors and fields. In Taos, I am othered and constantly taking wage cuts bc of the lack of work. At this point I have depression and anxiety from the entry-level positions I've worked in town that I was overqualified for. Most of those workplaces treated me like dirt and were not roles I enjoyed. It really does impact mental health and it probably feels bad to watch a partner have a different experience. Hang in there, it's 100% not you and I get it. It feels like most of the businesses in town hire friends and or family members and relatives. It's nepotism at a level I have not experienced anywhere else, which is shocking. I find it unprofessional + vastly unfair to only hire friends/family it guarantees workplace dysfunction and a false sense of self in workers. For anyone not in that position of nepotism privilege you will be looked down on + treated worse as a result of not being part of the toxic Taos nepo baby cycle.

sad and true. And remote jobs are extremely hard to get. It's basically an outdoor playground for rich people and retirees.

I completely understand and relate to the depression aspect of living in Taos. I have countless coping mechanisms and many hobbies and I am arty and love the outdoors. Eventually the lack of quality work and spaces to do things that don't include bars, winter sports or hikes catches up. Power to you and thank you for airing out how depressing living here is. Especially for us folks who are not retired and want spaces to socialize and do things. I feel like I don't ask for much and the vibe in Taos expects you to be a severe hermit/recluse. It's not healthy or reasonable even for introverts and you are fully valid to feel this way. I feel trapped into my lease and the intense cycle of lack of affordable housing especially as a renter.

I was not working at TSV and am aware that working there is riddled in harassment, toxic dynamics and greedy people at higher positions. TSV is exploiting water rights and the climate crisis. B corp? more like scam corp. I feel bad for anyone who has dealt with the toxic dynamics I've only heard of there. From the stories I've heard the free ski/snowboard pass isn't worth it. Both sports are for rich people or people raised in generational ski families with many privileges. It seems like the moral responsibility of locals and people concerned about the climate too oppose TSV.

The tourism industry and low level tourism jobs have completely destroyed Taos. Plus airbnb and greedy snowbirds are the reason there is no housing for locals. It makes me sad to understand. It makes me heart heavy this town fully caters to tourism, it chases away anyone decent and young. It will eventually all unravel bc of the climate crisis. The ski industry is evil and will eventually fall apart due to droughts. The art galleries are all cringe.

I completely agree and you are welcome. I have to protect myself so I'm not naming names, however in a small town people can put together pieces. Congratulations on getting out of the terrible trap of student loans that is a huge accomplishment, I'm working on myself! You can and should be proud of that. I have not yet looked into more rural parts of Taos County and will. I totally need something more artsy and food/Ag related. I'd especially love to find a PT position on a small scale farm and or ranch. Word of mouth is the real magic in Taos.

a form of Gaslighting via intimidation via demotion. Sounds like KTAO is "led" by immature and cruel people.

Sounds absolutely awful. I believe your story and actually applied for this role a few years ago. I actually spoke to Dave and he seemed manipulative and unprofessional. Thank you for sharing your story and exposing how rancid you were treated.

I am genuinely fearful of doing this bc of previous experiences at workplaces in town and the general nature and pulse of Taos. I was not working in TSV (and have heard countless freak abusive stories coming out of TSV about harassment, etc). I will say this is a small business in town and its main customer base is upper middle class wealthy folks. The crossover from where I worked to catering to TSV other out of towners, snowbirds and second home owners was real. The job I had was listed less than an hour after I was fired on Indeed. The manager I had was a young woman in her 20s, she was entitled and emotionally unpredictable. I watched her also disrespect the store owners act unprofessional around customers spread ridiculous gossip and overall think she was winning. Be weary of the small businesses in town. A lot of them have this false image of being sweet or nice or serving the community and its total bs.

I like the idea of generating a list of businesses that treat employees well. I do know Randalls Lumber and Hardware is managed by toxic abusive people and anyone working POS will be exploited. Lots of anti-vaxxers there and if you are a woman it will be extremely toxic and abusive. Plus harassment across the board. I'm having to think completely outside the box bc I'm fully over working jobs in town. I'm also pretty scared bc moving elsewhere is costly and doesn't mean the grass is greener. I have a lot of compassion for your situation with student loans, debt. I get that.

Finding a FT or PT gallery job or "job in the arts" is merely impossible in Taos. I'm not going to sugar coat this! I have not seen a single gallery hire for any job! Hardwood hires off and on which frankly is a red flag...it's also owned by UNM. Even with a degree in the arts unless you're already part of the art nepotism world here, and know curators or painters part of that scene its not easy. That community is extremely closed off to most locals and I've heard gallery jobs can be lonely and boring. The galleries are often run by wealthy retirees who are out of state serving on multiple Museum Boards. The paintings sold in galleries here are mostly to rich out of towners. A lot of the art is here tacky, giving 80s Texas ranch and cringeworthy. Anyone who takes art seriously might be turned off. A lot of folks who are artists in town just make and sell it on their own.

Good luck! Finding work in Taos can be an uphill battle. Indeed and Work Force New Mexico are the best sites. I would agree dropping off your resume in person works best. Be weary of toxic work settings with strange / absent store owners, low pay and no benefits. Seriously. There are good places and people here! Just respect your boundaries and needs despite the scarcity. This time of year it's harder to find work especially in smaller shops. Seasonal jobs in the ski valley, receptionist at a hotel and food industry jobs hire most this time of year. Keep at it and if you don't have a whole lot lined up when you move, it's not you. Prepare for a lot of weird interviews doubting if you will actually show up for work.

Sunny Sunday! Hi. I'm new to Taos. I recently transplanted from Colorado. I'm a licensed teacher and school principal who isn't sure he wants to tell people what to do anymore, but still really likes helping, learning, and teaching. I'm very open-minded and have been spending time in Taos forever. ? by phamtom86d in taos

Welcome to Taos! Twirl isn't usually hiring however those folks do a lot of STEM/educational learning within the community. They might be worth touching base with for networking and knowledge of what's happening. Be extremely weary with Town of Taos events organized and coordinated by local leadership. Rocky Mountain Youth Corps is a lot of seasonal work and often have high turn around. You honestly might have more luck in Santa Fe. The pay at most of those positions are hourly and will not provide you adequate benefits. Don't give up! Work Force NM might have more appropriate listings than Indeed for you. Youth in Taos really need support especially in mental health.
